Interesting book, IMHO

This book appears to me to be an attempt to portray the popular image of trolls to America. The book includes stories, descriptions of how they were told in a family setting, discussions of folklore collectors, artists, and so forth who were inspired by the folklore, etc.

Despite of the fact that (or perhaps even because) this is not a scholarly but rather a popular book, this helped me see the folklore for what it is, as a living and deeply embedded tradition with a powerful and complex yet still living soul. The areas of the book which appear to be "errors" from certain scholarly angles actually contributed greatly to my understanding of and appreciation for this area of folklore.

On the whole I would highly recommend this book.

if you like mythology and folklore you will enjoy the book

I picked this book up at the Norway pavilion in the World Showcase of Epcot Center when we visited Disney World last year. According to the most ancient Norse myths, when the Earth was created from the fallen body of the slain giant Ymir, the maggots which emerged from his corpse were transformed by magic into the light elves and dark elves, and most of the trolls belong to the latter. There are many kinds of trolls in Norway, some ugly and others deceptively beautiful, but the vast majority are mean, skilled at thievery, and living only to cause harm or grief to others. When Christianity came to Norway, the trolls were thought to be fallen angels or the souls of pagans who had died and could not go to heaven so they now roamed the earth.

The folk tales about trolls were first collected and set down in the mid-1800s by Peter Christian Asbjornsen, a zoologist, and Jorgen Engebretsen Moe, a minister. Following the example of the Brothers Grimm, the two published their first volume, Norske Folkeeventyr, in 1852. Later editions, beginning in 1877, were illustrated by artists Erik Werenskiold and Theodor Kittelsen, the latter of whom went on to publish his own collection, A Book of Fairytales for Children. In 1994 Joanne Asala, who received her degree in medieval English literature from the University of Iowa and has edited several collections of Scandinavian, Celtic, and Eastern European folklore, published a collection of Norse troll stories called Trolls Remembering Norway, from which the tales in this book are taken.

A few of the stories are a little grotesque, with talk about cooking and eating people, and might not be appropriate for some younger or more sensitive children. There are occasional references to drinking alcoholic beverages, such as ale and brandy, and to tobacco juice. The euphemistic “heck” and the word “Lord” used as an exclamation are each found once. Many trolls are pictured as having magical powers and able to engage in witchcraft, so those who object to mention of such things in literature will not care for the book. However, those who like reading about mythology and folklore will enjoy the book, which includes stories by such well-known Norwegian writers as Asbjornsen, Moe, Kittelsen, Henrik Ibsen, and Jonas Lie. It is interesting to see the interplay between the trolls and “Christians,” and some have discerned moral lessons in the stories. The last section tells how trolls “emigrated” to the New World.

A surprising focus on just trolls

This was released early last year but deserves ongoing mention for fans of fantasy in general and Norwegian folk stories in particular, offering a surprising narrowed focus on trolls and revising and expanding a previous title. Troll adventures appear in both stories and poems by Norwegian writers including such famous names as Henrik Ibsen.

About the Author
After gaining his PhD in 1953, Professor Smallman spent five years at the Atomic Energy Research
Establishment at Harwell before returning to the University of Birmingham, where he became Professor
of Physical Metallurgy in 1964 and Feeney Professor and Head of the Department of Physical
Metallurgy and Science of Materials in 1969. He subsequently became Head of the amalgamated
Department of Metallurgy and Materials (1981), Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and
the first Dean of the newly created Engineering Faculty in 1985. For five years he wasVice-Principal
of the University (1987-92).
He has held visiting professorship appointments at the University of Stanford, Berkeley, Pennsylvania
(USA), New SouthWales (Australia), Hong Kong and Cape Town, and has received Honorary
Doctorates from the University of Novi Sad (Yugoslavia), University ofWales and Cranfield University.
His research work has been recognized by the award of the Sir George Beilby Gold Medal of the
Royal Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Metals (1969), the Rosenhain Medal of the Institute of
Metals for contributions to Physical Metallurgy (1972), the Platinum Medal, the premier medal of
the Institute of Materials (1989), and the Acta Materialia Gold Medal (2004).
Hewas elected a Fellowof the Royal Society (1986), a Fellowof the RoyalAcademy of Engineering
(1990), a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Engineering (2005), and
appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992. A former Council Member of the
Science and Engineering Research Council, he has been Vice-President of the Institute of Materials
and President of the Federated European Materials Societies. Since retirement he has been academic
consultant for a number of institutions both in the UK and overseas.

Professor Ngan obtained his PhD on electron microscopy of intermetallics in 1992 at the University

carried out postdoctoral research at Oxford University on materials simulations under the supervision
of Professor David Pettifor. In 1993, he returned to the University of Hong Kong as a Lecturer in
Materials Science and Solid Mechanics, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2003,
he became Senior Lecturer and in 2006 Professor. His research interests include dislocation theory,
electron microscopy of materials and, more recently, nanomechanics. He has published over 120
refereed papers, mostly in international journals. He received a number of awards, including the
Williamson Prize (for being the top Engineering student in his undergraduate studies at the University
of Hong Kong), Thomas Turner Research Prize (for the quality of his PhD thesis at the University of
Birmingham), Outstanding Young Researcher Award at the University of Hong Kong, and in 2007
was awarded the Rosenhain Medal of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He also held
visiting professorship appointments at Nanjing University and the Central Iron and Steel Research
Institute in Beijing, and in 2003, he was also awarded the Universitas 21 Fellowship to visit the
University of Auckland. He is active in conference organization and journal editorial work.

Excellent Collection, but a Repeat....

Straight off, I must admit that I was disappointed in the selection of articles that make up this book. This book is a collection of 10 articles on Supply Chain Management that were featured in the Harvard Business Review over the years. While every one of them is good, my issue is that four of these had already been featured in the earlier Harvard Business Review on Supply Chain Management: [HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW ON SUP] published in 2006 (Note: You can see my review of this book on Amazon & I had rated it 4 stars). Reading them yet again is frankly a downer.

There are a couple of articles I liked. Prof. Hau Lee's piece to rethink your supply chain end to end instead of incremental tweaks is powerful and practical. So is the classic "What is the Right Supply Chain for Your Product?" - first written in 1997 and holding true even today - that explains how supply chains must vary between functional products (efficient supply chain) and innovative products (responsive supply chain). But the others that had depth and offered a new point of view were repeats from the earlier edition....

Would recommend this only if you have not read the 'HBR on Supply Chain Management'.

The two best articles were both by Hau Lee. The first cautions against simply making eg. environmental demands of suppliers such as use less water, pesticides, etc. because unanticipated consequences may occur, or they may not be able to do so on their own. Instead, take a holistic approach that may include developing new processes or even collaborating with competitors. This rationale is supported with clear examples.

His second article, 'The Triple-A Supply Chain' reports that despite efforts to improve the percentage of products marked down, the proportion rose from less than 10% in 1980 to over 30% in 2000, while consumer satisfaction with product availability fell sharply during the same period. High-speed, low-cost chains often centralize manufacturing and distribution facilities for scale economies and deliver only container loads to minimize costs - thereby possibly creating an excess of inventory. Other emphasize low inventory costs, creating sudden pressure on vendors to respond to sales increases, in turn generating more defects.

He suggests building in agility via improved communication between vendors and suppliers, having a dependable logistics system, using common components and postponing model differences to as late as possible. Another important factor is aligning supply-chain components - eg. with a cooperative/sharing approach that negates the otherwise tendency of individual components to maximize their own interests rather than those of the overall system.

While some of the articles may appear old and dated, supply chain fundamentals do not change much. These fundamentals are as, if not more, relevant in today's ecommerce world, as they were in the past. Each article has given fresh but different perspective with examples and case studies from industry. Fantastic collection.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861 1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.
