What is colonialism and what is a colonial state? Ranajit Guha points out that the colonial state in South Asia was fundamentally different from the metropolitan bourgeois state which sired it. The metropolitan state was hegemonic in character, and its claim to dominance was based on a power relation in which persuasion outweighed coercion. Conversely, the colonial state was non-hegemonic, and in its structure of dominance coercion was paramount. Indeed, the originality of the South Asian colonial state lay precisely in this difference: a historical paradox, it was an autocracy set up and sustained in the East by the foremost democracy of the Western world. It was not possible for that non-hegemonic state to assimilate the civil society of the colonized to itself. Thus the colonial state, as Guha defines it in this closely argued work, was a paradox--a dominance without hegemony.

Dominance without Hegemony had a nationalist aspect as well. This arose from a structural split between the elite and subaltern domains of politics, and the consequent failure of the Indian bourgeoisie to integrate vast areas of the life and consciousness of the people into an alternative hegemony. That predicament is discussed in terms of the nationalist project of anticipating power by mobilizing the masses and producing an alternative historiography. In both endeavors the elite claimed to speak for the people constituted as a nation and sought to challenge the pretensions of an alien regime to represent the colonized. A rivalry between an aspirant to power and its incumbent, this was in essence a contest for hegemony.

post-subaltern studies?

For those looking for the beginnings of the shift from the concern with 'the subaltern' in subaltern studies, this is a good place to look. The book is predominantly concerned with constructing a case for identifying 'the British' with capitalism, imperialism, and cultural domination and 'India' with tradition, resistance, and, dare I say it, hinduism. You don't get much sense of the cultural diversity, or class differences, within 'India' from this ostensibly 'marxist' book. A reasonably good review of this book, which shows how feeble its use of Marx is, can be found in 'Rethinking Marxism' 12:1, Spring 2000.

Fair and Balanced

The above reviewer betrays his own biases with some of his remarks. For one thing, Pre-Tribulationism is a minor aspect of the book. It has over 1350 footnotes, so simply claiming that the quotes from the Church Fathers are lies is not a response. You don't have to agree with the authors conclusions, but the emotional reaction against "reformational" theology is not a fair and balanced reaction. The book is well documented, although it does contain many errors which a good publisher would have caught.

Could benefit from recent scholarship and more

Reads great--I enjoyed it much like the DaVinci Code, but with a great deal of informed skepticism.
Plus it needs to be proofread for textual errors. Page 206 refers to a "Nazarite Sect" and I think it was supposed to say "Nazarene." There are other problems like that.

About the Author
Author/artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in 1974 in rural Okayama Prefecture, Japan. After spending time in art college, he won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his manga Karakuri (Mechanism). Kishimoto decided to base his next story on traditional Japanese culture. His first version of Naruto, drawn in 1997, was a one-shot story about fox spirits; his final version, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, quickly became the most popular ninja manga in Japan.

These 3-in-1 editions of Viz manga titles are a great buy for those just getting into titles like this! Manga titles like Naruto takes some getting use to, but it's worth it. Looking back, Naruto is a a well written but criminally underrated title what with the usual attractors feeling they have duty to bash and criticize a title they are not familiar with a manga like this. I highly recommend this for lovers of comics and cartoon art alike! Enjoy readers!

Second Story Slump

I'd probably give it 2.5 stars, giving #1 and #3 three stars.

Not a whole lot actually seems to happen in the second story, as can be a problem for the second book in a trilogy. Plus, the "teenagery-ness" got overwhelmingly tiring pretty quick. "Oh, I should tell someone about this - but I won't." "Oh, I'm in love with my best friend's sort-of-boyfriend - but not really, right?" Again and again, those two things come up.
Finally things picked up a bit at the end, which leads into the third book, a more compelling story, well.

Oh my god! This book was indeed awesome. When I reached the part when Morgan finds her mother(so called) I thought the book would be over, but then you have again created an amazing twist. I truly enjoy your books for the good twists they have.
