Scattered and Conflicting

This edition really does not have many changes from the revised edition so not worth the extra money. However the book itself is easy to read but the information through out the book conflicts itself and is a bit scattered. Our teacher throws out questions on tests because the book can't give a clear concise answer so it's not worth testing on.

Through the interdisciplinary and original research of a new generation of urban researchers across the global South and North, this book addresses old debates in new ways and raises new questions about sustainable urban development. About the Author
Margaret Mitchell Marsh
1900 - 1949

Born in Atlanta in 1900, Margaret Mitchell grew up surrounded by relatives who told endless tales of the Civil War and Reconstruction. She knew those who were relics of a de-stroyed culture, and those who had put aside gentility for survival. Her mother instilled in her that education was her only security. She attended Smith College but had to come home when her mother fell ill. After her mother's death, Margaret resolved that she had to make a home for her father and brother, so she left college and returned to Atlanta.

In 1923, she became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, she married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy.

She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents ... it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. ... "

In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse.

A great novel that deserves to be protected from the pc attacks of those who want to tell people what they can and cannot read

I bought this book after reading a politically correct rant in a magazine by someone who thought it was high time that the book should be shunned or even banned. In general, I tend to think that anything that people want to ban should be immediately and strongly supported for free speech reasons, if nothing else, but I did not necessarily have high expectations for the book. I assumed it would be a low/middlebrow, well written historical romance, but not much more than that. I was way wrong. Its a great novel on many levels: plot, characterization, narrative flow, and effective advocacy and support for a vanquished way of life (Mitchell does not pretend to be objective; she is fighting a rear guard action to defend the South she loved against the judgment of history; the reason she infuriated liberal critics from the moment the book was published to the present day was because she fought that action so effectively in this book.). Of course, her view of the institution of slavery was disingenuous (at best), but, on the other hand, her bitter attacks on the carpetbaggers and speculators during the reconstruction era certainly ring true. But the politics of the book are not the elements that make it great; it is the portrayal of an era and the way she makes you care about the events, characters, and land that make up Scarlett O'Hara's world

This novel is the second greatest selling book of all time (the Bible is first), and I can now see why it has maintained its extraordinary popularity for 75 years. That popularity was, and is, well deserved.

My Favorite Book of All Time

I love Gone Gone With the Wind. It has been my favorite book since the first time I read it when I was 14 (I'm considerably older now) with a couple years when I couldn't decide between that and Lord of the Rings. GWTW is lenthy, so if you dislike reading--try the Audible version. A great thing about long books is that the author is given the opportunity to really develop a plot with detail and you really get to know the characters. Margaret Mitchell certainly does that. GWTW has love, unrequited love,war, chivalry, a never-say-die spirit and the rebuilding of a civilization. I still find myself wanting to jump into the book at times and tell Scarlett a thing or two! When the book ends, I ask: "Is this all?" THAT'S how you know the book was awesome.

One of the top 5 books I've ever read

Who would have thought that a 1037-page, 80-year-old novel about a spoiled, petulant teenager in petticoats would completely suck me in, and turn out to be one of the greatest novels of all time?

Everything about this book is beyond superlative--vivid characters, settings that live and breathe, but especially Margaret Mitchell's prose. It would be worthwhile for any writer to study her sentences, every one of which flows with living motion, without a single flowery word. The dialogues between Scarlett and Rhett make sparks fly off the pages!

One could criticize the liberal use of racially offensive terms and the portrayal of happy slaves, but I would disagree. Within the world so meticulously created by the author, a bygone world, for all its faults, that was seen as being in equilibrium before its downfall, to have done otherwise would have been false.

This is truly the Great American Novel, in the top 5 of the greatest books I've ever read, and I suggest that you will thank yourself for reading it. My only regret about finishing Gone With the Wind is that now I can never again read it for the first time.

Very Practical, Enjoyable Book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this devotional book. There are 9 studies which each include a topic (such as "Focusing on God's Character"), a bible passage illustration the topic, and a sample prayer. There are also many prompts for group discussion. This book gave me confidence that I was praying more accurately and more in accordance to God's will; therefore it made me even more bold to approach the throne of our God in prayer.

It went On and On

I got this book to use in a local Bible Sudy group. We were studying prayer with our objective being this: that once we were through with the study of this little book, we would better know how to approach God and pray effectively. At least that was my objective.
As a sudy tool, I found this book discouraging. It offered two modes of study...one that took longer than the other, but covered the same information...the information in the book supplemented by Scriptural passages. I found the two modes of study to be confusing and our leader must have also as he followed neither mode. He just plowed through the information in the book. In many instances the "longer mode" just meant that more time was allowed for personal or silent prayer. I do not need printed instructions to tell me how to do that. So the Study Modes, which took up a fair amount of print, were useless to me.
Introductory questions and/or questions to initiate discussion. At the beginning and end of each lesson, a question or two was given to presumably stimulate the reader or the group to think about prayer or about things that MIGHT be related to prayer. The questions initiated group discussion and interactivity in the group. I found them to be simplistic and not always that closely related to prayer. Also, one question was always asked."How have you seen God working in your life this week?" I realize that we were learning and we needed to stay on track, but I like variety and this question got old after the second week. The whole group seemed to approach it with the following attitude: "Well, not that question again!" I would like to have seen things like: "What did you pray for this week that happened?" "Or did not happen." "Why do you think this occurred?" or "After using the techniques taught last week, was your prayer life effected positively, negatively, or not at all?" (And our leader DID add those questions in so the group did not just fall over from lack of interest or spark.)I mean that is just routine stuff, but was generally only hinted at in the book. Our group was not a "ho Hummmm" group, but the questions dragged us in that direction.
Specific prayer techniques WERE taught and were backed scripturally. We went over various of David's effective prayers; prayers that were used in the rebuilding of Jeruselem; silent prayer; intercessional prayer; and answers to the ever present "Why were my prayers NOT answered?" question. The backbone of the book centered on those items and it was interesting, but it was tedious. It was all stuff we had heard before and it was presented in a less that stimulating manner. Most of the book was just didactic. Do this. Do that and this, that and the other will occur. It was not brilliant. It was not spashy. It had no zing. It did not make me want to go shout and get in touch with God. It made me want to slither into my prayer closet, close the door and suffocate. No prayer closet joy here, just lifeless information.
We had a brilliant leader. He went to all sorts of trouble to add extra information, background, additional information to this book. But for me, it just fell flat. I have read probably only 30 books on prayer. That is not many considering how many there are and the various views people have on our pipeline to God. But, of all I have read, I must say, this was the least interesting, the least joyful, the least uplifting, and the least provider of new or, any, amazing information. It was a dud!

Martha Davis, PhD, was a psychologist in the department of psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Santa Clara, CA, where she practiced individual, couple, and group psychotherapy for more than thirty years prior to her retirement. She is coauthor of Thoughts and Feelings and The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook.

Patrick Fanning is a professional writer in the mental health field. He has authored and coauthored eighteen self-help books, including Self-Esteem, Thoughts and Feelings, Couple Skills, and Mind and Emotions.


Matthew McKay, PhD, is a professor at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. He has authored and coauthored numerous books, including The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook, Self-Esteem, Thoughts and Feelings, When Anger Hurts, and ACT on Life Not on Anger. He has also penned two novels: Us and Wawona Hotel. Useful and well done self help book

Starting with the premise that our thoughts create our feelings, the authors offer lots of ways to learn to listen to what our thoughts are telling us. They explain the techniques used in cognitive therapy and give practical steps for improving your life. I've used this book myself to help me get through some bad times, and given copies to several friends. I used to buy the self help books for a big library so I've seen a lot of them; this is probably my favorite for all around usefulness.

This is a great, and very practical

This is a great, and very practical, introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy, but one should get the latest edition (4th?) rather than the older ones. The first four chapters covering the foundation of CBT are the same, but the newer editions also contain many more techniques, including some that are based on Buddhist meditation practices. The key idea behind CBT is that "our thoughts cause our feelings" and most of the time our thoughts are generated automatically by our subconscious. The practices described in this CBT manual provide a way of relating more thoughtfully to our subconscious in a way that allows it to be more accurately perceptive of our lives. I think of this as educating our intuition! Anyway, this book has some great ideas and most, if not all of them, have been validated as effective for the treatment of a wide variety of mood disorders from depression to anxiety, phobias to procrastination. I'm telling all my friends and family to look into this book!

Thoughts & Feelings is a fantastic, easy-to-read self-help workbook utilising the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and validated for a range of mental health problems and is considered to be the treatment of choice for many disorders, such as depression and anxiety.

Thoughts & Feelings contains chapters dedicated to common problems such as coping with panic, worry control, depressive thinking, overcoming phobias, controlling anger and relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic and contains some useful background information plus loads of exercises to help the reader deal with the problem. The workbook contains activity pages that the reader can write on to undertake the activity or exercise.

I would recommend this workbook for anyone wanting to overcome the specific problems that are the central features of this book, namely depression, anxiety, phobias, worry, anger, stress and panic.

I would also recommend this book to CBT therapists to use with their clients as the authors use jargon-free and easy-to-read language that clients with no prior knowledge of CBT would easily understand. As such, the workbook will aide therapists in explaining the CBT model to cleints. Furthermore, the activities are great at tackling the core thoughts that are believed to maintain common client problems such as depressionn or anxiety.

About the Author
Hans Jonas(1903-1993) was the Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research from 1955 to 1976. He was born and educated in Germany where he studied underEdmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Rudolf Bultmann. He left Germany in 1933 and lived in Palestine and England before coming to North America. He influenced ethical philosophy--especially bioethics--and the study of gnosticism.

Fun, but Could Have Been Much Better

If your child likes Clifford, this book is fun. But to see how much better a glow-in-the-dark book could be, take a look at
Scooby-Doo and the Halloween Hotel Haunt : A Glow in the Dark Mystery
This Clifford book has more words on the back cover describing the book than inside telling the story! I wish they'd put in just a bit more effort, so that we could read it for 10 minutes instead of 2 minutes.

This a timely story set to rhymes on how we can have inner beauty. From helping a friend to apologizing for past mistakes the main character Alex learns what it means to have inner beauty and how to share that beauty with get loved ones and friends.

This is a lovely read and will make a great bed time story. I recommend this book with its colorful pictures and positive story. We need more children's books like this one. Pick up a copy for your son, daughter or grandchild today.

This book is delightful! Many books for African-American children focus on outer beauty to combat negative self-image, which is important, but this is the first I've seen to concentrate on character and inner beauty. I can't say enough about what a great message it conveys.
