Murach's Visual Basic 2012, by Anne Boehm

This Visual Basic book has been a favorite of developers ever since the 1st edition came out in 2002.

Now, this 5th Edition is a self-paced, professional book that shows how to use Visual Studio 2012, VB 2012, and the .NET 4.5 classes to develop Windows Forms applications. It's a data programming book that shows how to (1) prototype professional database applications using RAD features like data sources, (2) start using ADO.NET to work directly with databases for more control, and (3) use LINQ to query a variety of data sources, from databases to arrays to XML files. It's an object-oriented book that shows how to use business classes, inheritance, and interfaces the way they're used in the real world. It's a hands-on book that shows you how to develop your first Windows 8 apps and submit them to the Windows Store.

When you're done, you'll be able to develop 3-tiered, object-oriented Windows applications the way the best professionals do. And you'll have the core VB and Visual Studio skills that you need to develop any VB application...whether for Windows, the web, or mobile devices.

Good coverage of Visual Basic 2012
By Paul Turpin
It had been several years since I had done development work with Visual Basic and I needed a refresher on the subject. I am a big fan of Murach books, so it looked like this would be a good book to use. I am a database professional and there is a large amount of the book devoted to using Visual Basic with relational databases. The book did a good job of introducing enough of the subject to get started and then giving deeper dives into various topics in later chapters. The chapters end with one or two exercises that the reader can complete to apply the knowledge they learned in the chapter. The coverage of object oriented programming principles was quite good.

Section 1 of the book is Chapters 1 -3 and is an Introduction to Visual Basic programming. This section is the first one hundred pages of the book and it is a very good introduction to Visual Basic. Chapter 1 is an Introduction to Visual Studio and it gives a good overview of it. It quickly covers Form Designer, Code Editor and the Solution Explorer. It also gave an introduction to working with Windows (the Visual Basic type). Chapter 2 jumped into designing forms and spent 40 pages covering the subject. I always like learning how to test programs and Chapter 3 was titled “How to code and test Windows Forms”. The chapter contains a good introduction to object oriented programming using Visual Basic. I liked the coverage of properties, methods and events.

Section 2 of the book covers the Visual Basic language essentials. This section cover control structures, procedures & event handlers, handling exceptions, validating data, using arrays & collections, working with dates & strings, forms & controls, multi-forms and message boxes. I found Chapter 11 a really nice introduction to classes. Chapter 12 was my favorite chapter since it covered debugging an application.

Section 3 was about Database Programming and is close to one fifty pages long. This was the section of the book that most interested me, since I am a database professional. I thought the author did a good job of covering the basic topics and then showing how to use that knowledge to write Visual Basic programs. Chapter 13 provides a good introduction to relational databases an introduction to SQL and an introduction to ADO.NET. Chapter 14 shows how to work with data sources and datasets. Chapter 15 gives instructions on working with parameterized queries. Chapter 16 covers more advanced ADO.NET topics.

Section 4 is covers advanced object oriented programming topics. Chapter 17 is about working with default properties, events and operators. Chapter 18 is about working with inheritance and Chapter 19 covers working with interfaces. Chapter 20 is about working with classes and documenting them. Chapter 21 covers working with files and streams. Chapter 22 explains how to work with XML files. Chapter 23 covers the use of LINQ. Chapter 24 is about enhancing the user interface. Chapter 25 gives a lot of information about deploying an application, including how to deploy a database application. The book concludes with Chapter 26 introducing Windows 8 programming techniques.

Appendix A gives details about setting up a Visual Basic environment to use with working through the book exercises, which was very helpful.

Great Book!
By William e Russell
I'm not a professional programmer so I can't compare Vb to C++. The book get's right to the heart of what you need to know about the VB.net language. It is easy to follow and find reference information 'on the fly'. I particularly like the fact that the auther stick's with a project and builds on it, adding more complex concepts and feature’s as you progress. You find yourself creating a full-featured, professional looking program that you can lift whole code segment’s out of and modify to suit your specific needs. As a side note, I called the publisher for some specific information about the book. I was surprised when the phone was answered by a real, live person who was courteous, polite and most of all, helpful. Hat's off to Murach Publishing -- THANKS --.

Must have book.
By Christopher Mann
I’ve looked through a few Visual Basic books, but this one is the best I’ve seen on explaining the little nuances of the Visual Studio features for the language. This is a great book to start you out with the basics. The reading is so informative and this book will make a great reference for future use.
