When he was eleven, Mitchell Hogan was given The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy to read, and a love of fantasy novels was born. He spent the next ten years reading, rolling dice, and playing computer games, with some school and university thrown in. Along the way he accumulated numerous bookcases’ worth of fantasy and sci-fi novels, and he doesn’t look to stop anytime soon. For a decade he put off his dream of writing, then he quit his job and wrote A Crucible of Souls, Book One in the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence. He now writes full-time and is eternally grateful to the readers who took a chance on an unknown self-published author. He lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Angela, and daughter, Isabelle.

or rather I quite like the story
By Amazon Customer
On the one had I quite liket this book, or rather I quite like the story. I was impressed and intrigued by the first book, the second was somewhat disappointing, and this last one.... I don't know. There is a good and interesting story in here, but it feels like the author wanted to write a complex semi dark story, following the latest trends in the genre, and did not quite manage. Often times the character developments seem hasty and forced, and I find it difficult to understand just why certain actions would affect our hero (and others) certain ways. The plot also feels a bit stretched out to me, I feel that these 500 pages could with great benefit be shortened to 350. Making the book a bit faster, although it is not slow exactly. All that said I really enjoyed reading the works of a new author. It really did keep me entertained, and I will continue buying works of this author in the future, because I really do belive he has a future! :)

4.5 out of 5 - Fresh and Immersive with deep characters and a really strong plot
By Donald T.
“A Shattered Empire” is the third and final book in Mitchell Hogan’s Sorcery Ascendant series. As Calden continues to come into his powers, he faces opposition from all sides. The Protectors and Warlocks all want him to be used by and for them. Amerdan is looking for him. The emperor himself has his eye on Calden. Even Gazija and his people need Calden if their plans are to succeed. All Calden wants to do is be left alone and spend his days with Miranda, but deep down he knows that he is meant for something more. The book ends with the eventual showdown between the emperor and his forces versus Kelhak and the Indryllans.
I had some concerns about “A Shattered Empire” after I finished reading the second book in the series “Blood of Innocents”. My fear was that the story that Hogan had set out was bigger than a trilogy. And while I thoroughly enjoyed this third book and the series as a whole, I definitely feel like there should have been at least four books. Hogan did a pretty good job of wrapping up the overall story in this one. There isn’t some terrible cliffhanger at the end or a feeling of dissatisfaction once the story is complete. There are however a lot of things that maybe weren’t given enough time to develop correctly or completely. Calden’s powers for instance, are continually (and conveniently) growing with little work on his part. He just seems to “figure stuff out” on his own where the other sorcerers in the story have had to spend years and years training. Even Gazija, who possesses power beyond anything the world has seen in centuries, seems dumbstruck by an automaton that Calden built in one short scene in the book. Other things that are missing from the story that I think could have been included to make the story better would have been some explanation of Gazija and Quiss’s people. Hogan tells us early on that they are not from this world, but then never goes back to give any more info about it. We’re never told the name of the place they came from, or anything else about their past, their roles since they came here, or what their plans for the future are. Another fairly glaring omission (for me anyway) was the lack of the Dominion game playing a bigger part in the story. After the first book in the series, I was intrigued with that aspect of Hogan’s story and was certain that it would play a prominent part in the series. And while it is mentioned or made reference to several times, it never blossomed into a larger part of the story. And that seems odd after Hogan spent so much time talking about it in book one. Also, what happened to Amerdan’s possessed doll??
Those things aside, the book is still very good. I think most of the characters were believable, and I loved the fact that Hogan never tried to give us a good versus evil climax. It was instead, Calden being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils, all while trying to survive so he could pursue the life he wanted for he and Miranda after all of the dust had settled. I also enjoyed the fact that this series didn’t feel like anything I had read before. I think it’s easy for books (in the fantasy genre in particular) to seem tired and over-done. But Hogan’s story felt fresh and immersive with deep characters and a really strong plot. I would recommend this series without hesitation and would absolutely read Hogan again. A very good trilogy.

Mitchell Hogan is one of my new favorite authors
By Joshua
So I picked up the first book of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence during a sale on Amazon and it took me a bit to get in to it. Learning the way they do "magic", the different terminology used etc took a bit to grasp. However, once I was in it, I was completely mesmerized. Since then, the second book was released (in 2014, I believe) and now, at long last, the third book is here.
I'll first acknowledge that there are issues with this book. Many other reviewers have covered them so I'll only touch on a few in a general sense.
However, know that these issues do not detract from the enjoyment of the book. Not since the Red Rising series have I been so engrossed in a book. In fact, my wife had to call me out and say "are you really reading your book while walking down the stairs?"
The Good:
Great story telling, Mitchell Hogan takes you on a nice meandering story line, moving in and out of different places and plots throughout the book. There's a sense of camaraderie between certain characters, some are protective of others, some despise others - and Mitchell does a good job of using those emotions.
Some nicely written combat scenes (nothing gruesome), some nice moments where you're wondering "no way this character will overcome this or get out of this situation" etc.
New sorcery and styles of combat are introduced in this book so it's not just a stale rehash of the previous 2 books.
There's more I could say but for the sake of brevity, let's get on with the bad.
The Bad:
As others mention, there are areas that could be improved. Such as - there are more characters in focus in this book than previous ones but some we don't fully get to understand or learn their history, their peoples' history etc. Quiss is one of these.
Other characters are introduced in this book, play a crucial role, then sort of fade away
The ending does wrap up fairly nicely, however in the last couple pages it leaves just enough foreshadowing that it makes you realize a 4th book is entirely possible. And while everything seems to come together, it's abrupt. A certain character is in a certain place but no mention of what that character will do from here on out, for example.
Other characters that meet their demise do so very suddenly. Not that this is necessarily bad, but at times it feels like the author knew he wanted to end the character so he stuck it in wherever he could.
All this to say - my complaints are mostly just personal preferences and did not in any way take away my enjoyment of this book. I highly recommend this whole series as I trust it will be well worth your read.
