simple and strange

This was a somewhat odd little book. It took a long time to catch the flow of the story. And I really didn't like the fact that the story ended once the man woke up. I think it would have been better if there was some conclusion to the relationship part of the story. The main character was written as if he was a bit special needs, and that disturbed me a little. Overall, it was a decent book. Not one that I would recommend, but some might enjoy it.

Tender love story

I loved this story. It reminded me of TIM by Colleen McCullough and MUSCLING THROUGH by JL Merrow, two of my fave stories.

The main character, a nurse's aid, is a big sweetie, using his all to do the right thing, and the other hero, who was attacked by homophobes and kicked out of his family home, is certainly deserving of his care.

This is a hopeful and delightful story of grace

This is a hopeful and delightful story of grace in the theological sense and and in the daily activities of life. I definitely knew the story had a Happy Ever After ending but I was still surprised that Ms Easton was able to include the "expected terminal extubation" otherwise called withdrawn of mechanical life support details in such a well written yet a concise manner that the story did not stumble when the patient was able to breath on his own. Ms Easton is one of my favorite writers in the m/m romance genre as she keeps the focus on the character and his development without padding the word count with page after page of needless sexual acrobatics details.

I was very glad Ms Easton decided to update and republish her story from 2013 to 2015 as Amazon heavily favors new and recent works when it makes suggestions. Without the update, I might have missed this excellent example of storytelling. The cover of this short story was also created by Ms Easton and like the covers for her other Kindle work is very eye catching.

Former Goldman Sachs investment banker Talbott (Obamanomics) delivers a tightly written analysis of the financial crisis that while sufficiently credible and engaging, adds little to the conversation. Talbott launches a tirade against prevalent myths conveniently categorized as Stock Investing Lies, Lies About the Global Economy, etc. He summarily attacks the U.S. government, lobbyists, the media, Alan Greenspan and Henry Paulson, and pronounces the entire global banking system insolvent. Despite some bravado behind these sweeping claims, many of his assertions are convincing—the roots of the collapse of our economy are a lack of regulation, conflicts of interest between business and government and a preponderance of lying and cheating. Talbott sometimes stumbles (e.g., stating that companies that make addictive products are not good investments even when they consistently outperform other sectors) and while he promises to offer real solutions, he provides ideas that will win few fans, such as allowing the economy to contract, creating new bankruptcy processes to deal with the corporate fallout and permitting the government to inflate the currency. Talbott does this to Wall Street and investing in his book The 86 Biggest Lies on Wall Street. The format here is pretty simple. You have "Lie #nn: " followed by the statement that tends to be spouted as a truth that everyone accepts. And then Talbott proceeds to smash it based on his observations and experience from a lifetime of working in Wall Street. Given his track record in calling the mortgage crisis and banking crisis, he does bear some attention. For instance, he starts out with a heavy hitter, and that is that the American economy was the strongest and most resilient in the world heading into the current crisis. When he digs below the stats usually cited to "prove" this, you see why he disagrees. He sees GDP growing due to population growth, not due to a strengthening economy. There's also the matter of illegal aliens hiding the true growth of the population. Borrowing has driven the increased consumption, which means that in addition to "growth" you have debt. Total debt outstanding in the US has gone from $25 trillion to $60 trillion in the last 10 years, and he doesn't even bring in the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare. Family income has also increased due to spouses joining the workforce, as opposed to real income per individual worker increasing. When you add all this up along with other observations he has, you realize that this economy was far from healthy and robust.

Talbott also has harsh words for the Troubled Asset Relief Program that Hank Paulson deemed critical to getting the markets unfrozen. In fact, lie #17 is "everything that Hank Paulson ever said about the Troubled Asset Relief Program". Can't get much more inclusive than that. He shows how the initial target of the plan was immediately dropped after the legislation was passed, and money was instead given to banks who were in good standing with Paulson. Talbott also shows how, if banks had really sold their bad properties to TARP, there would have been even worse financial ramifications, as it would then be possible to value the bad debt and banks would be forced to revalue their balance sheets (for the worst), leading to even more solvency issues due to being over-leveraged.

I felt the part that I struggled with most was on stock investing, as we've been told certain things for so long. Talbott takes on the low P/E recommendation, companies that should be able to weather any crisis, and how EBITDA is more reliable than net income in assessing a company's earning potential. He does have alternative recommendations for all of these situations that are worth considering. You may not agree, and you'll certainly get pushback from the industry "experts", but given how things have gone of late, their expertise may not be all it's been cracked up to be...

86 Lies is recommended reading if for nothing else to get an alternative view of how the economy is really functioning. You can then choose to agree or ignore, but at least you'll do so with a more complete picture of reality.

Much more than a populist diatribe

The title of this book might imply that it's a populist diatribe, but the book is so much more than that. John Talbott manages to provide very clear, concise, and (most importantly) logical explanations for the roots of the current financial crisis, along with his strong opinions about how it might have been handled, and what's in store for the future. Along the way, he does manage to dispel a number of popular myths about this recession.

Interestingly, the book is about as totally non-partisan as a book on the politics of economics could possibly be. He simultaneously lambastes the corporate world for it's greed, excesses, and short-sightedness, while at the same time strongly criticizing Obama's strategy for ending the economic malaise. He couches his explanations in terms other than liberal vs. conservative, or Republican vs. Democrat.

For people who would like to understand the roots of our current situation, and listen to some practical suggestions and (sadly, rather dour) prognostications on the future, this book is an excellent investment.

Very well written book, concise and to the point. I've learned quite a lot from reading it. Some author's beliefs I can't agree with but overall the picture he depicts is unfortunately very true.

My only criticism is author's premise that markets are efficient which leads him to conclude, for instance, that Harvard likely trades partially on inside info. While this certainly could be true, my research indicates that one can beat the market using short-term approach (granted it's not easy) and Harvard's trading team returns are certainly reasonable. In this day and age holding a belief that markets are efficient or they are a random walk is a clear bias people hold on to for psychological reasons since computer simulations can demonstrate that neither is true.

One thing I would add to the gloom and doom picture is often neglected aspect of environment. On top of all other purely economics problems, we also face an unprecedented environmental threat which can't be considered as entirely unrelated problem. For instance, we could soon reach a point when not regulating companies is not an option due to environmental hazard they create, but imposing regulations on them would push these companies into bankruptcy.

As for politics, I 100% agree that current model is unsustainable. In my view, it's ridiculous that we elect people based on how well they campaign. As a result, we have politicians making worst economic decisions possible.

About the Author
Barbara Nagle earned a master of science and doctorate at Hahnemann Medical
College and University in the department of pharmacology. Following postdoctoral
training in ocular pharmacology at Will’s Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, she taught pharmacology
and physiology to medical students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic
Medicine (PCOM) and to nursing students at Widener University. After several years in
academia, she moved into the pharmaceutical industry at Glaxo Smith-Kline, Endo Pharmaceuticals,
Bio-Pharm Clinical Services, ICON, and InKine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as
Director of Clinical Information and later Vice President of Clinical Research, Training
and Quality Assurance. She has been part of the research effort to bring products through
clinical development to FDA approval such as gastric acid suppressants (antihistamines),
beta-blockers, antiinfectives, muscle relaxants, and oral contraceptives. Her most recent
affiliation was with Endo Pharmaceuticals in pain management research prior to her current
activities as consultant and educator. She has served as International Director of
Drug Development Training and Medical Education for BioPharm. Professional memberships
include the Sigma Xi Scientific Research and American Medical Writers Association.
Barbara is a freelance photographer, traveler, and silk painter.

Henry Hitner earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Moravian College
in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and spent several years working in the pharmaceutical
industry, first as a research assistant in toxicology for Wyeth Laboratories and then
as a research pharmacologist for National Drug Company, both in Philadelphia. During
this time he earned a master of education degree in biology from West Chester University.
He attended graduate school at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia,
where he earned a PhD in pharmacology. Dr. Hitner then went into academia, where
he held numerous faculty positions, first as an instructor of biology and allied health
sciences at Montgomery County Community College, followed by 30 years of teaching
and research at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). At PCOM
he served as professor and vice chair of the neuroscience, physiology, and pharmacology
department. Other positions included director of the animal facility and chair of the
institutional animal care and utilization committee. Professional memberships included
the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and the American Society for Pharmacology
and Experimental Therapeutics. He was the recipient of the Lindback Foundation Award
for Distinguished Teaching and a Mentor Award from the National Student Association.
Henry and his wife Carlotta enjoy traveling, the beach, and time spent with family and
their nine grandchildren.

I studied Drafting years ago and was very close to getting my degree. However I did not finish because I sought a career in the Army instead. I have used what I learned to continue in drawing different things I have made over the years. Now that I am retired I have purchased many different books that help me to stay sharp in making Blue Prints and scketches. These come in handy as practice so I might go back to school and finish getting my degree. Most drafting is done on the computer however doing a good rough draft is still easier and quicker on paper.

Peter Walsh gave me a mind shift about my possessions: What I need/want, and what I can release and let go of.

I cannot say enough good things about Peter Walsh, and his ability to change my thinking - seriously shifting my brain to realize I do not need all this STUFF. I feel free for the first in my life of the hold that things, mementos, clutter, had on me. I am mid-stream in my down-sizing, was never a hoarder, but even people with neat and tidy homes have too much stuff. When I cleaned out my front coat closet, for instance, I had 16 pair of gloves. Various materials, bought at different times, on trips when I had forgotten to pack them or we got a sudden cold snap. Now, after donating, 14 people will have gloves. I did the same with mufflers, hats, and coats. It feels good. In my wardrobe, I had so many duplicates: for instance FIVE black turtleneck sweaters, as just one example. My core wardrobe is much leaner now, looks fantastic, easy to pack and unpack and wash. Before I had so many clothes and way too many choices and I would get overwhelmed by what to take. I am an author and I travel around the globe - (I write a thriller series about a globe trotting archaeologist so my books are set everywhere). I needed easy choices, but still need to be professionally clothed. Peter has completely taught this old dog new tricks. I love his books.

Just What I Needed

I had been feeling depressed at the "stuff" all around me, I didn't know how to start. My mother living with me is wonderful, but it's hard to part with things that were hers, or she gave to me, or "were" still useful. This had made me purge my stuff and let me wait for a better time for other things that belong to her. My children are getting asked what they want that we have stored for them AND having them decide what they want that belongs to us. A garage sale with donations to follow is in our near future. Peter is amazing, I couldn't go through this without his wisdom and direction. Bless him for his help through this book!

A timely book!

I pre-ordered this book and received it on Feb. 14th, the day it first was available. I read it over the next few days, and learned how to handle going through a loved one's possessions after their death. My mother was put on hospice care at the beginning of the month and I knew the info in Peter's book would eventually be needed. Two days after I finished the book, on Feb. 22nd, my mom passed away! I found myself quoting from the book as my sisters and daughters and I went through Mom's apartment and decided what to keep and what to let go!
An idea that we had turned out to be helpful too: after the memorial service, at my sister's house for the family get-together and dinner, she set up a "Grandma Shoppe" in the basement with the things we had kept, and had the whole family go downstairs and choose things they wanted for their own homes and as mementos, and things that had personal meaning for each one. It worked out very well, and everyone was happy.
