Pretty Things For Nice People: Tales of Patrons & Artisans-----The Challenges and Triumphs of 20th Century Artisans in New York, by Joseph

For nearly a century, three generations of Fiebiger men created masterpieces in metals for the most well-known families and institutions in America. Their firm, P.A Fiebiger Inc., became a legend for its dependability and creativity. In the beautifully illustrated and insightful Pretty Things For Nice People, Joseph G. Fiebiger, grandson of the founder, pours out his passion for the works and their patrons as he tells an American story of hard-earned success and of creating and protecting lasting national legacies. Pretty Things For Nice People is a tribute to ingenuity and industry and a historic volume that may be regarded as the firm’s final work of art. Today, the firm’s influence is seen in such important institutions as the Morgan Library, The Frick Collection, Central Park, the U.S. Capitol, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ellis Island and that American icon with the French foundation, the piece de rsistance, The Statue of Liberty. This book reveals the continuing love story between artisans and their patrons. It explains how they unite to transform vision into reality in new projects and to protect and restore historic works. In perhaps the most famous of these efforts, one particular lady became both patron and an object requiring restoration: America’s beloved Statue of Liberty. Many of the sometimes warm, sometimes testy encounters in this book are more personal than monumental. CBS President Frank Stanton wanted to protect something his late wife loved; Oscar-winning actor Paul Newman became indignant at a presidential sleight; New York socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor measured her trust of men by her love for dogs; and The Donald sought help in a quest for a design that was years ahead of its time. Pretty Things For Nice People presents a rare, authentic and expert examination of the Great Lady in the Harbor. Demonstrating that she exists in more than metal and stone, the author conveys the uplifting dynamic she instills in so many visitors today – just as she did for millions of newly arriving Americans through the decades. This book unveils the ambitions and challenges of the architects, conservators and interior designers whose ideas were brought to glorious reality by talented and dedicated artisans. These projects – many now part of the texture of America – encompass Old World, high tech and low tech methods skillfully supported by the undying belief that necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention. Relying on common sense and experience, these artisans solved some of their most puzzling problems on major restoration projects by employing common household items – orange juice and ice. While some portions of the book are poignant and others funny, some take the reader behind the scenes in such places as the U.S. Capitol and the world’s finest museums. The author demonstrates that no design is just a design and no statue is just a statue. He tells the inside stories such as how famous architects use their skills to gently poke fun at wealthy clients and how the death of President Abraham Lincoln contributed to the creation of the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps the greatest love affair between the Fiebiger artisans and a dramatic work of art is the relationship with the Statue of Liberty. Joe explains the challenges of construction and marvels at the talents of acclaimed engineer Gustav Eiffel (10 years before his famous tower), artist Frederick Bartholdi and architect Richard Morris Hunt – each man’s contributions essential to the creation of the symbol of liberty. Dynamic, knowledgeable passages and vivid photographs – from the broken chain at her feet to the majestic torch -- give readers a more intimate perspective of the project that restored the reign of the Lady in the Harbor.

Pretty Things For Nice People: Tales of Patrons & Artisans-----The Challenges and Triumphs of 20th Century Artisans in New York
By Eric Cabot
Pretty Things for Nice People is a delightful memoir and behind-the-scenes view of what is arguably the most respected and influential firm of artisans who worked in twentieth century New York City. Pretty Things is written by one of the nicest people of all, Joseph Fiebiger, who took the reins of his family's metalworking company in the late sixties. In this book Fiebiger uses a breezy, accessible tone to lead the reader through a candid, and often witty, tour of a sampling of projects that include major restorations of public buildings and original masterpieces, rendered on both the colossal and domestic scale. The journey begins with a small commission for an iron fence for a church in Brooklyn and culminates with massive restorations of two American treasures, The Statue of Liberty and the main building at Ellis Island, which has the largest copper roof in the country.

The "pretty things" part of the book offers insight into the technical challenges and the firm's often novel solutions. By way of explaining how the projects were completed by orchestrating teams of people with varied skills--be they in the form of design, metallurgy, or hands-on metalworking-- Fiebiger is unstinting in offering well-deserved praise for each person's valued contributions. However, Fiebiger is equally free in offering his perspective on some of the interpersonal difficulties encountered, especially with the larger, high-budget, high-profile works.

The "nice people" part of the book's title signifies a non-technical aspect of each project. Mr. Fiebiger, always respectful of the ancient traditions of trust and obligation between artisans and their patrons, gives us his personal view of the nature and motivations of some of his most interesting clients. Some are wealthy, often generous, members of high social standing, while others are among those entrusted with curating or maintaining well-known institutions such as New York's Metropolitan Museum and public properties such as Central Park and the U.S. Capitol.

This book, with is its in-depth look at both the technical and human sides of many interesting works, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone interested what lies behind the facade of artisanal metalworking projects in our modern times.

A True Classic about a Company that knew what it meant to be a Fine Craftsman in America!
By carl close jr
I just finished reading the book" Pretty things for nice People" written by Joe Fiebiger and I'll have to say is is absolutely Fantastic!!!
His writing style is fun and and allows the reader to peak inside a life that was filled with wealthy and powerful people and to see just what it takes to help these clients get what they want . Joe' s company P A Feibiger was the leading Decorative Metal working company in New York and provided the very best of Forged and delicately fabricated metalworkthat the nation has ever seen . Under Joe's Direction he took on some serious challenges , such as restoring the Statue of Liberty as well as creating new Ironwork fences at the Frick Museum in NewYork City. All this work matched the original Masterpieces in exactness and spirit! This book is a real treasure in that Joe loves to add little back stories about the clients and the jobs that became real challenges for the companies master craftsmen as well as Joe himself. The book includes many funny stories that Joe conveys about New York socialites as well as well known real estate developers that will leave you in stitches.
Brilliantly Included in his writings you will find a multitude of techniques that the Company employed to repair and create some of Americas most beloved works of decorative art. .
As a Artist Blacksmith and business owner that services a similar client base I truly appreciate his thoughtful writings and and his extreme knowledge about the fine art of metalwork. I will be purchasing many of these book as gifts for fellow craftsmen as well as architects and designers who i collaborate with and feel there is a real value in everything Mr Fiebiger has written about
I Highly Recommend this Book and Know you will be entertained as well as enlightened about what it takes to be a leader in artistic metalwork in New York City and the journey to get there !!!! Carl L Close Jr Principal Hammersmith Studios LLC

"Pretty Things....." is a nice read
By GeorgeB.
Joe Fiebiger (author) is a modern day business man. He has taken over the family Iron Works business handed down from his father and grandfather (founder) - their memory is with his every move.
The early chapters in the book discuss people who were very influential in Joe's career. The bulk of the book looks at projects done for such notable clients as Brooke Astor and Donald Trump. A good portion of the book gives an in-depth accounting of Joe's signature project, the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in the 1980's.
Throughout the book, Joe interjects his own feelings as problems and awkward situations arise. Joe is an interesting guy and I found myself laughing at his "off the cuff" comments.
I enjoyed the book. It's an impressive list of names and places that kept me engaged throughout.

From Booklist
Greiner’s obsession with an idea for an earring organizer launched her into a long career as inventor and entrepreneur. With no background or education in business and none of the advantages of the Internet age, she now has more than 400 inventions to her credit, 15 years on QVC’s Clever & Unique Creations, and her notoriety as the “warm-blood shark” on Shark Tank. Greiner has much to share with aspiring inventors. From her own early efforts, both failures and successes, she shares what she’s learned along the way from concept to market shelf, including designing, patenting, manufacturing, pricing, and marketing. Greiner includes step-by-step instructions and checklists to identify the basic elements—usefulness, uniqueness, safety, well-priced, desirable, and easily demonstrated—of promising inventions. She includes advice on how to use social media and online surveys to do market research and the pros and cons of getting financing through friends, family, banks, crowd funding, or venture capitalists. Most fascinating are her behind-the-scenes looks at QVC and Shark Tank as she recalls the ups and downs of pitching ideas. --Vanessa Bush

Well-written, Highly informative and Lori's Personality Shines Through Each Page
By Christine Abraham
Shark Tank investor Lori Greiner has published a fantastic book for turning ideas into profit. As a small business owner, I've read several mommy millionaire books on starting a business. This book by Lori Greiner crushes those books and hits it out of the ballpark! Lori has been called the "Queen of QVC." She has helped launch over 400 products and holds 120 U.S. and international patents. She is passionate about encouraging others towards personal success and leaves no hidden secrets...Lori puts it all on the table for her readers, by including both her failures and her success. Topics in the book include:

*Research Your Market
*How to Get Funding
*The Truth About Patents
*Pitch Perfect
*Manufacturing and Packaging
*Beyond Brick and Mortar
*Marketing That Really Works
*Expand and Diversify

From the time I picked up the book I was unable to put it down. The book is well-written, highly informative and Lori's personality shines through each page. If you are a fan of the Shark Tank television show, you'll like the stories Lori shares about working with the other investors and the prospects presenting their pitches. I highly recommend this book!

"Unicorn" Shares All: Tips, Advice, and Information
By Becky Rose
Lori incorporates her story of her first product, an earring organizer, from conception to stores in 4 months, and her evolution into entrepreneur conglomerate and "unicorn" on Shark Tank, with behind the scenes info. As A preacher of DIY, she has become an expert in manufacturing, patents, and design. She also stresses importance of family, fun and compassion.

The book is linear, but explains you will be doing several steps at once. It will require hard work and dedication on your part.

Topics include:
Are you ready? Public speaking a must amongst other listed criteria. Is your idea a hero or zero? How and why with a summary checklist provided. How to make your product, from prototype (design engineers, PMS 365, mock up, 3D printing, plastic manufacturers, injection molding, CAD design...don't know what I'm talking about? It's all in the book:-). Again, at end of chapter a helpful checklist is provided.

A chapter on market research is provided and then she dives into the inevitable, daunting task of funding ( business plans and what you need to know). Without providing her personal Rolodex (dream on people!) she lists where to look for funding with many examples and the pros and cons. Very thorough and enlightening for me. Do you know what a DVRT company is? I didn't either.

Next up. Patents and then Pitching. How tos, what to do...more info with some great success stories. If you are lucky enough to make it this far, Lori continues by sharing manufacturing and packaging secrets. What to consider, overseas options with reputable contact info provided, regulations and laws, quality control, etc.

The later part of the book moves into driving your business ( you are never done) and then beyond brick and mortar, which is mostly about TV options, Internet options, and catalogs. She wraps up the book with marketing options and why she loves social media.

Compared to mommy millionaire books I've read, this one is way more informative with a lot more step by step and practical advice. I learned a lot and a lot about where to find more information. Her examples, tips, and advice are priceless and inspiring. I really like Lori, her voice, the way the book is organized, and how she makes it all seem possible. She seems to genuinely want to help others and I thinks she does that with this book.

I would recommend to any one who has an idea and doesn't know what to do with it. I'm going to give a copy to my niece who is going off to college for inspiration. It's a great book for both male and female entrepreneurs. And for all those Shark Tank dreamers.

Honest, helpful and easy to read
By monkuboy
I'm not really a fan of Shark Tank. My wife loves the show and keeps telling me to watch it. I've watched bits and pieces of it, but to tell you the truth the judges, or sharks, don't appeal to me because they are so aggressive and the show is all about money money money. So then why did I read this book, written by one of the sharks? Because someone I know is an "inventor" and I wanted to see if this book would be worth recommending to him. It is.

I am not familiar with Lori Greiner. The bits of the show I've watched, I have seen Mark Cuban and the other two guys talking, along with the older lady and I don't like any of them. I guess I should watch for Ms. Greiner, since she has written what I feel is a very good book. At first I thought this was a quick bit of work to make money by taking advantage of her shark status. Obviously she wants to make money from it, but the reader gets his or her moneys worth; I got the impression she really cares about helping the reader to be successful. When she talks about her experiences, it seems more about helping and not about bragging.

The book is well-organized, with chapters covering all the major aspects of bringing an idea or invention to market. It isn't sugar coated, and it is written in a very personable way that makes it easy to read and understand. Having a business background (but never having tried to market any of my own ideas), my two cents is she provides a sensible, solid foundation for someone who wants to market a product. There's no fluff in the book, it's all practical and wise advice. She makes it clear that just because you have a great idea doesn't mean you're going to get rich - there is a continual emphasis on how much hard work and effort is required, as well as being quick to stay ahead of possible competition.

I think for the person who has what he or she feels is a good idea or invention and has thought about marketing it, this book makes an excellent resource. You will learn a lot from Ms. Greiner's voice of experience.

Immigration and Identity: Turmoil, Treatment, and Transformation, by Salman Akhtar

Why do people migrate from one country to another? What is the difference between an immigrant and an exile? What determines the psychological outcome of immigration? Can one ever mourn the loss of one's country? What are the defensive functions of nostalgia? Are there specific guidelines for psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for immigrant patients? How can the therapist disentangle the patient's cultural rationalizations from underlying intrapsychic conflicts?

In this unique book, psychoanalyst and poet Salman Akhtar provides answers to such questions. He notes that migration from one country to another has lasting effects on an individual's identity. Such identity change involves the dimensions of drives and affects, psychic space, temporality, and social affiliation. Dr. Akhtar addresses the immigrant's idealization and devaluation, closeness and distance, hope and nostalgia, transitional area of the mind, superego change, and linguistic transformation. With poignant clinical vignettes, he illustrates the implications of these ideas for the therapeutic process where the therapist, the patient, or both, are immigrants. Immigration and Identity, replete with poetry and personal letters from immigrant colleagues from many nations, conveys its message with irony, wit, laughter, pain, sadness, empathy, and, above all, clinical and human wisdom.

Review
Immigration is at the cutting edge of the globalization of our world and is a subject that demands the nuanced understanding and evocative communication Akhtar brings to the task. For clinicians as well as social science researchers, his work is bound to become a classic! (Afaf Mahfouz Ph.D., chair, International Psychoanalytic Association-United Nations Committee)

This wonderful book elucidates the intrapsychic and reality factors that prompt immigration and also the reactions to realities encountered by the immigrant. I highly recommend it for both mental health professionals and lay readers. (Ruth F. Lax, Ph.D.)

Akhtar's book is of enormous relevance in today's era of migration, displacement, exile, and alienation. With his usual clarity and poetic style, Akhtar elucidates the factors that impinge on the identity and adaptation of immigrants and their acceptance in the new community. His book touches all of us who have been displaced from one culture to another, and are comfortable everywhere but rooted nowhere. (Helen Meyers, M.D.)

A special book indeed!
By BASANT PRADHAN
I see this book as narratives of a person who is not only a poet, academician & therapist but also has experienced the psychological stages one goes through during immigration & acculturation. Being an eminent psychoanalyst & prolific writer, Dr. Akhtar's books are always wonderful reads. Being an immigrant psychistrist & psychotherapist, I think I live through the pages of this book & thank him profusely for writing this masterpiece.
A wonderful book indeed!

Excellent book for clinicians

Wonderful food for thought abounds in this book, with clinical examples to support theories and themes. This book is helpful in framing treatment issues that arise when working with individuals in psychotherapy (with any kind of psychological distress) who are immigrants in America and elsewhere.

A difficult book to get through...
By Mathias
This is a book that is interesting and compelling, even heartbreaking at times, and since the only people who would be buying this book are more than likely fans of Brad Davis or of Midnight Express, it's worth reading.

But the key words of that last sentence are "at times." Those who previously used the word "annoying" to describe this book are right. To get to the moving moments, one must bear with Susan Bluestein Davis, who is so self-absorbed and, well, annoying, that it's hard to get through the book. For example, the first three chapters are filled with her listing every famous person she or Brad has ever met or whom Brad has been compared to. It's frustrating. I expected to be reading about Brad Davis, but the book is more to be about Brad Davis in relation to her. What seems to have kept their relationship alive is the deep denial Bluestein was/is living with, which kept her so dedicated to him, while in return he gave her "the best sex [she] ever had in her life." And that's it. Davis treated Bluestein so badly-he treated everyone very badly, but especially her. Then again, she found ways to justify his behavior. She stood by him through everything, but only by avoiding as much of the truth as possible. It's hard to criticize someone who has been through so much.

I would have rather read a biography of Davis written by someone else. His widow may be the best source, and she did promise him to write the book, but her narrative takes away from what could have been a much more powerful book.

What a pathetic waste of money...
By W. Field
I was extremely disappointed with "After Midnight". The author, his widow, has written the book from her own life's perspective, and there is sadly little about the true Brad Davis. His homosexuality, or perhaps bisexuality, is mentioned only in passing, and anyone in New York or Hollywood that knew him will tell you that this was a huge part of his life. I guess a book written by his wife can't be expected to delve too deeply into this area, but even other interesting details - his drug addiction, his acting technique, etc. are only minimally suggested here. I wanted to put the book down after two chapters, but kept waiting for it to get interesting. I suggest the publishers retitle the book "My Life with Brad Davis - The Saga Of A Wife Kept In The Dark", or something similar, to indicate to readers that this book is about Susan Bluestein, and tells very little about Brad.

Fascinating...yet disappointing
By A Customer
I originally bought the book because "Midnight Express" was one of my favorite movies and was the vehicle that prompted me to stop using marijuana when I was 17 years old. Brad Davis' performance in that film left me frozen in my seat and changed my life from one of "partying and getting high" to focusing on a career and educating myself.
I was deeply disappointed that Susan failed to see that her husband did at times in his life have sexual relations with men. She admits it by saying he was a hustler and hustled men in New York City before he was a big star. Yet several times in the book she says "Brad was not Gay" or "I know that Brad was never Gay". He may not have been gay, but he certainly was bisexual. He had to have some desire or homosexual tendancies to have had sex with men. He had more gay friendships then most gay men I know.
The underlining message of Susan's book is that she wants the stigma of AIDS to be accepted (we all do) and not have victims chastized for acquiring the virus. Well many of us want our gay lifes to be accepted as well. Just as Brad did not chose to be an AIDS victim...we did not chose our sexuality. When people start to accept people for whatever they are...be it color, religion, sexuality or misfortune of being ill with AIDS or Cancer...and we are able to accept diversity in society the world will be better place.
I hope that Susan and Alexandra (Brad's daughter) continue to live well in the wake of the hell they endured through life with Brad Davis. However, they cannot and should not forget his wonderful contributions to entertainment with his roles in "Midnight Express", "RFK" and "Roots". All of these performances of Brad's are memorable ones for me. But Midnight Express was the one that changed my life forever and I owe that to Brad Davis and Billy Hayes, the character on which the story was based.

WINNER OF THE BANCROFT PRIZE

PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST

The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Sven Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today.
In a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful politicians recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to make and remake global capitalism. The result is a book as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2014: How important is cotton? For starters, there’s a good chance that you’re wearing it right now. That’s true no matter where you live in the world. Cotton is everywhere, has been for a long time, and was the dominant commodity during the early years of our country. It fostered “war capitalism” among European nations. It helped launch the industrial revolution in England. It drove slavery. The story of cotton is the story of modern capitalism, and in Empire of Cotton, author Sven Beckert shows how a worldwide crop that came in multiple forms and was cultivated and produced in many different ways came to be dominated by the late coming Europeans, and later Americans, often through violent means, reshaping both the world economy and the world itself—for better or worse—along the way. – Chris Schluep

Review

“Masterly. . . . Deeply researched and eminently readable, Empire of Cotton gives new insight into the relentless expansion of global capitalism. With graceful prose and a clear and compelling argument, Beckert not only charts the expansion of cotton capitalism . . . he addresses the conditions of enslaved workers in the fields and wage workers in the factories. An astonishing achievement.”—Thomas Bender,New York Times

“Important . . .a major work of scholarship that will not be soon surpassed as the definitive account of the product that was, as Beckert puts it, the Industrial Revolution’s ‘launching pad.’”—Adam Hochschild, New York Times Book Review

“Breathtakingly comprehensive, informative and provocative.”—Glenn C. Altschuler, Tulsa World

“Persuasive . . . brilliant . . . Beckert’s detailed narrative never scants the rich complexity of the cotton trade’s impact on many different societies.”—Wendy Smith, Boston Globe

“Empire of Cotton proves Sven Beckert one of the new elite of genuinely global historians. Too little present-day academic history is written for the general public. ‘Empire of Cotton’ transcends this barrier and should be devoured eagerly, not only by scholars and students but also by the intelligent reading public. The book is rich and diverse in the treatment of its subject. The writing is elegant, and the use of both primary and secondary sources is impressive and varied. Overviews on international trends alternate with illuminating, memorable anecdotes. . . . Beckert’s book made me wish for a sequel.”—Daniel Walker Howe, The Washington Post

“Momentous and brilliant . . . Empire of Cotton is among the best nonfiction books of this year.”—Karen R. Long, Newsday

“Compelling . . . Beckert demonstrates persuasively how the ravenous cotton textile trade in Europe was instrumental in the emergence of capitalism and draws a direct line from the practices that nourished this empire to similar elements in the production of goods for today’s massive international retailers. Those who long to know more about how and why slavery took hold in Europe, Africa and the Americas will find this book to be immensely enlightening. Better still, those who live out the troubled legacy of the exploitation and enslavement of workers in the service of the cotton empire will find in it added inspiration for their continuing efforts to realize a just and more equitable society.”—Ruth Simmons, President Emeritus of Brown University

“Intellectually ambitious . . . a masterpiece of the historian’s craft.”—Timothy Shenk, The Nation

“A highly detailed, provocative work.”—Booklist

“Hefty, informative, and engaging . . . Beckert’s narrative skills keep the story of capitalism fresh and interesting for all readers.”—Publishers Weekly

“[Beckert’s] close-up study of the cotton economy is a valuable model for the study of capitalism generally, an economic system in which slavery and colonialism were not outliers but instead integral to the whole . . . a valuable contribution.”—Kirkus

“Fascinating and profound. . . .Global history as it should be written.”—Eric Foner

How slavery, colonialism, and strong state involvement laid the foundations of modern prosperity
By Robert J. Crawford
This is an academic treatment of how the modern industrial economy was born: heavy in detail, clear in analysis, if somewhat dry at times. While much of the ground has been covered elsewhere, the synthesis, breadth, and grand themes that emerge are unavailable in a single volume, to my knowledge. For me, it was a seminal reading experience, a necessary perspective that brought things together in a way that will influence my view of modern society for the rest of my life.

The principal idea of the book is that the cotton industry, which represented the first step in the development of the modern industrial economy, was created by slavery and brutal and ever-more-efficient state coercion in cooperation with private capital. Global in scale, this convergence of factors would re-fashion the everyday lives of a majority of people on the planet - subordinating their working days to the rhythms of machines that replaced human muscle labor, opening the way to unprecedented prosperity for many, and enabling decisionmakers far from their homes to control the lives of people they will never meet.

Beckert sees several steps in these developments. In the beginning, there was the development of "war capitalism". In a nutshell, this was the forcible appropriation of land and labor, with the cooperation of a primitive form of the state. While cotton had been in use for millenia, it was limited to small, very local, networks at this time. As demand grew and new forms of mechanized manufacture began to appear, war capitalism vastly increased the scale of cotton cultivation, employing slaves to undertake the backbreaking work of clearing the land and then the thankless task of harvesting the cotton - their utility was cheap labor that could be forced to work by any means necessary. Meanwhile, the state aided in the acquisition of land - because it exhausted the soil quickly, cotton cultivation required continual land appropriation - and the displacement or elimination of whomever was unfortunate enough to occupy that land, in most cases Amer-Indians. For their part, capitalist traders emerged in Manchester, a mercantile capital that gained tremendous market influence and political power to bring the state into alignment with their interests.

The next phase opened with the invention of new means of production, in particular in the harnessing of chemical power in mills of ever-expanding scale and with elaborate forms of administrative innovation. At the same time, the state got involved with the protection and establishment of markets for their goods, both in supply but also for selling, i.e the distribution of goods. Industry was national and nationalistic. The natural culmination of this was the colonial enterprise. This was the second great legacy of the cotton empire: the de-industrialization and control of vast new territories. For example, the skills required for the production of the fine muslin of India were completely and forever destroyed. The native populations were subjugated to this order, fitting integrally into a hierarchy that exploited them while enriching captains of industry and politicians in colonial capitals. Meanwhile, manufacturing facilities became the source of massive employment, drawing people from the countryside to urban agglomerations that grew to then-incredible proportions.

Furthermore, the state remained intimately involved in the development of the economy in the major colonial states, not only in the development of supporting infrastructure, but in the legal subjugation of workers for the protection of the evolving industrial practices. This was the crucial step in the virtuous circle that arose of self-reinforcing economic development, resulting in a far more intricate and complex industrial economy that emerged in the product cycles of related manufactures. It can only be described as a revolution that changed our lives so fundamentally that it is on a par with the neolithic revolution.

Of particular interest is the evolution of the political economy of slavery. It was seen as a necessity for cotton production in the American South - a phenomenally profitable enterprise that created capital for further industrial investment that benefited all free Americans regardless of location - and as a crucial basic resource for all the new manufacturing powers. When the American Civil War began, it severely disrupted the world economy, based as it was on cotton, and the industrialized nations desperately sought to increase the supply of raw cotton. After that war, it was proven that low-wage sharecroppers could be counted on to produce cotton in a profitable way, supported as it was by state and private repression of the newly freed slaves. The colonial powers took note of this. In the US South, this arrangement was to survive for almost a full century, when automated cotton picking was finally perfected in the 1940s.

The most recent phase of the industry is its globalization, a shift of manufacturing to the former colonies. The real power gravitated to transnational corporations - predominantly retailers like Walmart or Gap - that were no longer subject to coherent national legal jurisdictions, hence largely disconnected from nationalistic considerations. While this caused the precipitous decline of once-prosperous cities like Liverpool, it is part of the ebb of flow of 21C capitalism. Organizational innovation extended to the development of massive logistical networks to handle getting cotton to manufacturers and then distributing their low-cost products in developed nations at a hefty profit. As this is so new, it is the least developed portion of the book. I suspect it decisively locks Third World producers and manufacturers into a lower-value added position, where design and brand generate greater profits for transnational corporations and their shareholders that no longer need to worry about employees in their home base of operation.

The implications of the book are of great interest and relevancy. First, it proves that the free classes all benefited directly and lastingly from slavery as an enabler of the first phase of industrialization. Without slaves (and subsequently share croppers or colonial serfs), both investment capital and the self-reinforcing and expanding product base of consumer capitalism would have accumulated far more slowly, perhaps over centuries rather than decades. This is the best argument for reparations that I have yet seen - the line from slavery and colonialism to prosperity for most of us is direct, while the descendants of slaves and serfs remain exploited and oppressed. Second, the state functioned as a crucial support for the development of private enterprise, from protecting nascent industries to enforcing laws that favored the manufacturing class. This flies in the face of neo-liberal ideology, which argues for a "free trade" that locks the developing world into an inferior status.

This book is a wonderful intellectual adventure, its ideas are far more subtle than I could ever express here. It is a bit too academic for my taste, covering developments in exhaustive detail, but on the whole it is a page turner. Recommended with the greatest enthusiasm.

A History of Capital and the Industrial Revolution for the 21st Century
By Jonathan M. Soffer
Sven Beckert's Empire of Cotton continues on a global scale his project in his first book, The Monied Metropolis: New York City and the Consolidation of the American Bourgeoisie, 1850-1896, in demonstrating that the US is not an exceptional Arcadia emancipated from the repressive political, economic, & ideological forces of global capitalism. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of our global system of political economy, indeed for anyone seriously interested in the development of the 19th and twentieth century world. Beckert, a professor of history at Harvard University, creates a history of capitalism for the 21st century, decisively demonstrating that older Marxist scholars notably Eugene Genovese, were wrong to argue that slavery was a pre-capitalist mode of production, with the implication that Southern US slaveowners were somehow more benevolent "paternalist" employers than Northern industrialists. He also definitively challenges classical liberal lines of scholarship that argue that superior western institutions (other than the military) and free markets led to the economic expansion of the West. Unfreedom had far more to do with the rise of capitalism than freedom, liberty, or democracy. Even after the post-emancipation shift to industrial capitalism, capitalist enterprise remained tied closely to, and probably could not continue to expand without strong exercises of state, particularly military power. In line with recent scholarship by Walter Johnson, and Edward Baptiste, Beckert demonstrates that slave labor and state action on behalf of private interests were integral to the establishment of capitalism and to the industrial revolution.

Conducting research in the archives of every major country that produced cotton or finished cotton goods, and consulting local scholars where he doesn't have the languages, this book is also a model of transnational scholarship. Beckert traces the global evolution of cotton production and consumption, noting that in the early modern period, Western Europe was notable as a non-cotton producing region, making it even more remarkable that in the 19th century that it should become the center of the cotton trade.

He divides capitalism into two periods--war capitalism, which lasts until the US Civil War, was the first system. "Slavery, the expropriation of indigenous peoples, imperial expansion, armed trade, and the assertion of sovereignty over people and land by entrepreneurs were at its core." He then demonstrates the close ties of supply, transport, communication, and credit with plantation forced labor. The knowledge and wealth that war capitalism expropriated, he argues, were "crucial preconditions for Europe's extraordinary economic development."

But expropriation and slavery, along with the deindustrialzation of the original producers of finished cotton goods in Asia and South America were not stable bases for bourgeois property and production. The revolution in St. Domingue in 1793 disrupted the English cotton industry and shifted production the American South, until the US Civil War ended the southern states' near monopoly of world cotton exports. This second American revolution, fought over the issue of free labor, shifted much of the cotton business back to Asia, Egypt, and Central America. Britain and other cotton-military- industrial complexes expanded their penetrations of colonies, such as India, where peasant labor had resisted the complete replacement of subsistence crops by cotton that Manchester demanded.

The new system, industrial capitalism, based on wage labor, both created political openings for workers in the West. "The dependence of capitalists on the state, and of the state on its people, empowered the workers who produced that capital. . . By the second half of the nineteenth century, workers organized collectively, both in unions and political parties, and slowly, over multiple decades, improved their wages and working conditions." The increased production costs eventually made the reindustrialization of the global South possible, and the center of the cotton industry has shifted there.

Empire of Cotton is surely one of the most significant works of history published this year. It is not impossible that in ten years that historians will consider it one of the most significant works of the decade.

"Vast sphere of war capitalism"
By evolveape
"...starting in the sixteenth century, armed European capitalists and capital-rich European states reorganized the world's cotton industry. It was this early embrace of war capitalism that was the precondition for the Industrial Revolution that eventually created an enormous further push toward global economic integration and continues to shape and reshape our world today..."
An excellent account on the importance of cotton in the development of capitalism with the emphasis given to slave labor. My only question is while discussing capitalism the author makes no reference to "Das Kapital" even Karl Marx have many attributions to cotton industry in England in his work . Let us not forget F. Engels who provided the information and data to Marx due to his connection to the textile industry in England, his family owned factories in Manchester. In his work " The Condition of the Working Class" Engels too gives examples of workers in the cotton mills of victorian Manchester: As an early advocate of workers cooperatives, George Jacob Holyoake writes in the secularist paper "Reasoner": "As you enter Manchester from Rusholme, the town at the lower end of Oxford road has the appearance of one dense volume of smoke, more forbidden than the entrance to Dante's inferno". In writing the ills of capitalism Engels admits that he was shocked: "I have never seen so systematic a shutting out of the working class from the thoroughfares, so tender a concealment of everything which might affront the eye and the nerves of the bourgeois as in Manchester" "..in such dwellings only a physically degenerate race, robbed of all humanity, degraded, reduced morally and physically to bestiality, could feel comfortable and at home" Likewise Robert Owen, an utopian socialist, was a textile manufacturer himself tried to change the conditions of his workers by introducing a model of equitable employment and community cohesion in his factories. Furthermore on the impacts of American Civil War on cotton industry in England the author misses hundreds of thousands Lancashire laborers enthusiastically supporting Abraham Lincoln's ideals and the anti-slave North being fired, cut back to part-time and earnings reduced. As a result food riots broke out. (See "History of Cotton Famine." by R. Arthur Arnold) In addition to all this, no reference is given to John Hobson and his work on "Imperialism". Hobson's focus on industrial capitalism as the driving force of imperialism and his great influence on V.I Lenin and his work "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" is well known. These references would have only enriched the argument in the context of "war capitalism". Now that the cold war is over and Soviet Union has been disintegrated the historians should not hold themselves from exploring the classical works out of the fear of being labeled as "marxist".

A fair review of this book appeared in slate.com by Eric Herschthal entitled: "The Fabric of Our Lives"
http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/books/2014/12/empire_of_cotton_a_global_history_by_sven_beckert_is_a_great_history_of.html

Despite the shortcomings mentioned above I should still consider it as an important work about the history of cotton industry especially in connection with slave trade and development of industrial capitalism.
