I am a female boxer,and have been training hard for the matches I soon have.Reading about Mia gave me the courage and be what I want to be,A BOXER.Mia was thinking training for the 2000 olympics,since she has a black belt in Martial Arts,but she decided not to and picked up a pair of boxing gloves and boxing shoes to become one of the greatest boxers ever,in a whole with the men too.When I am hitting the bag and doing lethal sweating I think of Mia and in this magazine you can see her beautiful muscles and jumping rope with hitting the speed bag like the professional boxer she is.Me still a amateur still look up to her to get me through the tough times I go through being a female boxer,someday I hope to go professional just like Mia St John.I would love is she would be my coach and teach me the rest of her wisdom that keeps her a champion.For any female boxer out there,look uo to Mia St John.I am a Female Boxer and she is a Female Boxer.It rocks!

A walk along memory lane.

Hi! This Playboy issue seems to stand up to the test of time. Articles are as interesting now as when the magazine was new. The subjects may seem a bit dated but still worth a read. There are ads for liquor and cigarettes. I'm thinking cigarette ads are not allowed in magazines anymore. Haven't seen any in ages. The magazine follows standard Playboy format. Sports, lifestyle, Playboy Advisor, girlie photos, centerfold lady is Cara Wakelin plus bawdy cartoons. I give 5 stars because I find no reason to deduct a star. If you collect older Playboy issues this may be one buy.

I agree this book is amazing.

In a poetic, yet detatched way, Maya Angelou captures the heart of her struggles growing up female and Black during the Depression. Her style and description draw in the reader and keep her spellbound even during the most painful scenes. You feel deeply for the author and her little brother as they drift through their lives living for a bit of affection. Neglected by their divorced parents, Maya and her brother get sent to Arkansas at ages 4 and 5 to live with their grandma and handicapped uncle. Although life is hard and love not demonstrated, Maya learns much from her grandma and uncle.
The theme of this book is the quest for the child to be loved by the adult. Maya feels inferior. She feels ugly and compares herself to her magical brother Bailey. Both children are starved for true affection and daydream a white movie actress on the screen is their long lost mother.
Maya and her brother are eventually united with "Mother Dear" in St.Louis when she is eight. Unfortunately Mother's boyfriend begins to abuse Maya(...). This is graphically portrayed in the book. Maya's feelings of not belonging and not being truly loved are compounded after the abuse.
I admire all the autobiographical books by Ms.Angelou. She has achieved a lot in her life for a person who started out in such a sad situation.
This book should be read and re-read.

Misleading Warnings

Going into my freshman year of high school and my first honors english class I was told by my church to beware of the evil book they would force me to read-- I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

It was protested because of the vivid picture painted of her sexual abuse.

After reading it I can only shake my head at the people who warned me of this book. By refusing to read it because of something horrible happening to someone you fail to really realise that things of that nature happen.

Reading this book was an eyeopener to me-- to understand just where people like Maya come from. I was riveted throughout this book. Easily it is one of the better books I've read.

An adult review--and one teacher's viewpoint

May I tell you why I choose to have my ninth grade students read it? I have noticed a lot of reviews by young people, which I applaud, but an adult perspective might be helpful.
I don't particularly feel the need to defend its merits. (I am not articulate enough to do justice to that task.) As with any book, some will love it and some won't. Guaranteed, it will make you uncomfortable at times, because one chapter describes the rape of a young person--which is painful for any compassionate human being to hear. Plus, there are other sexual issues, largely stemming from the earlier assault, but also because she is a teenager in the last phase of the book. Such questions about love and sex are characteristic of the teenage years. Many young people, as well as adults, are confused about such topics. While these are generally the most controversial segments from the book, the fundamental lesson of the book goes far beyond the survival of one victim. I won't supply you with the answers as to what one should take away from the text. It is a personal experience for each of us.
We can all learn from Maya's honest account of her childhood journey. We can all try on her experiences and live vicariously through her for a while, and see how it changes our own perspective on what it means to be a human being.
I'll be the first to admit, this book is a challenge for all my students in one way or another. Some because they are white and live in the northern US. Some because they are male and it's difficult to view life through a woman's eyes. Some because of the adult vocabulary and extensive use of figurative language. Some of these experiences are so remote from their own, while others are very close to home. It helps them to see how much we actually do have in common with those who at first seem very different. They all can benefit from reading it, if they give it a chance. (Adults may be better equiped to appreciate fully this text. However, young people can take so much from it. Maybe one day, we can have an abridged version, so it is still rich in language and meaning, yet condensed so more young people can access its many gifts.)
Beyond the darkness of some of those experiences (discrimination, rape, humilation and fear) lies a powerful sense of hope, dignity, determination and resilience. One of my favorite aspects of the book is its emphasis on the power of education, language and literacy. Throughout Maya's life--books, poetry, impassioned voices have all inspired her. Her autobiography is a moving tribute to a literate way of life and an enduring legacy to that tradition.

Useful, Not Authoritative

Van Doren does a pretty good job of tracing the history of knowledge, putting the major events in our intellectual evolution in some kind of useful perspective. Not being an expert, I'll accept the criticism of many other reviewers here that the book contains errors and is even sophomoric in some chapters. But on the other hand, I learned a lot about things I had little familiarity with, and I was able to trace, in some rudimentary fashion, how one thing led to another to another to another... Of course, since the book was written in 1991, Van Doren's attempts of predicting the future, near and long-term, are necessarily naive. When he wrote it, the Internet was not in full bloom, 9/11 hadn't happened, the Green revolution had not really caught fire. As the author proceeds through history, his personal opinions creep further and further into the text. Finally, when he reaches the 20th Century, his often hysterical and naive views come into full flower which takes away from the book. All in all, if you're a scholar, you'll probably find the book wanting. But if you are a layman, looking for a book that coherently describes the evolution of knowldge in a simple format, you've come to the right place.

Good Summary of Civilization

If you enjoy learning and don't remember / never knew much of the basis for human thought and other historical information, you should enjoy this book.

It begins with very early man and ends with a stretched imagination about the possibilities for the future. Each subject (from philosophy to digital computations) is well covered for novices. The author does a great job of focusing on philosophy and how it's shaped civilization.

Another interesting, well-done explanation involves digital technology and how it compares to analog.

From science to religion to politics, the author carefully explains and does well at refraining from biased thought at most turns.

This is a book I have already referred and will do so again.

Get ready to go deep

I travel the country, a 3 -D model of the female pelvis in hand and educate women about their pelvises. I try to read every book out there to recommend what i feel are the best on the market about this covert subject. Wild Feminine stands out amongst all the books that i recommend because it takes on the subject in a very different way. Wild Feminine asks women to do some of our own deep internal work both literally and psychologically/spiritually. Tami Lynn Kent asks us to stop and take the time to figure out how we FEEL about our pelvis and how our pelvis feels about us. She guides us to listen with compassion to the stories of our pelvis. Having taught this work for over 5 years, I know EVERY woman's pelvis has a story. Many of them are filled with sorrow and pain. Ms. Kent's voice is one of a true healer that puts the reader at ease and guides the reader to invite the feelings to be experienced and brought to light. The book is filled with writing exercises and rituals to get the communication lines open between you and your pelvis. If you are ready to go deep, i give this book my highest recommendation!

Beautiful book for helping woman to reclaim their divine feminine nature. The techniques Kent recommends are very honoring and healing for the female body. I recommend this book to all my clients now who have any type of lower chakra imbalance, including infertility issues, sexual blocks or wounds, pelvic distortions, menopause, gynecological challenges, etc.

This book will help all students of natural medicine and women's health weave together the lessons we have learned from our great teachers, Dr. Northrup, Dr. Arvigo, Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Ina May Gaskin - to name just a few. Tami is a scribe for those of us pioneering back into the frontier we left behind, but can never escape, the Wild Feminine! Outstanding guide for clinical use!

I have used this manual since my days as a student at Northwestern University. I have used the information to revise departmental procedures, make clinical decisions and teach students. The outline format is well organized and helpful. Information is thorough, evidence based and concise. This is a book you will keep as a reference. Physical agents reamin a powerful adjunct for clinical treatment, and access to clear and objective information is essential to making good clinical decisions. This book should be on your shelf!

Gr 7 Up—Scott's freshman year is over. The mistakes he made in Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie (Dutton, 2005) are over and remedied. Now that he is a sophomore, he is confident—and less endearing than he was in the previous volume. The narrative plays out as Scott goes from one class to another throughout the school year. Scott's crush on the Sphinx-like Lee and his worries about his dad's business are underdeveloped adjuncts to the larger, less appealing story of the teen's mean-spirited commitment to one-upping his English teacher. When the teacher instructs Scott to write a 2,000 word essay on arrogance, he writes in favor of it. The rapport between student and teacher continues to deteriorate and Scott turns in a clever but cruel essay ridiculing the educator. Still, there are many moments of humor. Word-lovers will appreciate Zenger Zingers and Scott's advisory comments to his baby brother, Sean. In the end, Scott acknowledges his wrongdoings, but given the intensity of his pride, his remorse lacks conviction. SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is creatively written and a thoroughly fun read

Scott just finished a great summer with his friends, Lee and Wesley, and he is more than ready to start his sophomore year. After a chaotic freshmen year full of adventure and life lessons, Scott feels like he’s ready to handle anything. At first he’s right --- sophomore year starts out smoothly. Scott’s already made a few new friends, helped a freshmen survive his first day and got assigned a great spot on the school paper. While his parents are busy with work and the new baby, they support Scott in every way they can. Unfortunately, Scott’s good luck doesn’t last long. His biology teacher and English teacher both seem to have it out for him, and his grades are starting to slip because of it. Plus, Lee’s dad doesn’t seem to like Scott much either, which isn’t great considering how much Scott wants to ask Lee out.

As the year goes on, things seem to go from bad to worse. Scott’s grades slip so low that he isn’t allowed to participate in any extracurricular activities, including the paper. His plan to make money by selling copies of his freshman survival guide is foiled when someone uploads a copy online, free for all to see. Not to mention, Scott still hasn’t asked Lee out on a real date and the school year is coming to a close. When the school paper and other clubs are cut from the school budget and his biology teacher is threatened to be fired for refusing to teach creationism, Scott knows he has to step up to the plate and get out of his sophomore slump for good.

Funny and heartfelt, SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is an excellent follow-up to author David Lubar’s SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE. While fans of SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE will love this novel, people who haven’t read the companion will also find it very enjoyable and will be able to follow along easily. Told through first person point of view narrative and journal entries, SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is creatively written and a thoroughly fun read. The lovable characters and high school drama will draw readers in right away. While the book is pretty light-hearted for the most part, it definitely covers some more serious topics, including corruption in schools. However, the more serious parts were kept relatively short, and the overall feel of the novel is light and fun. Personally, I wish that Lubar would have covered the topic of suicide more deeply in this novel, as he touched on it in SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE, and I feel like it is a serious issue in high schools nationwide. Otherwise, however, Lubar did a fantastic job of crafting a completely enjoyable read.

Fans of SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE will love seeing their favorite characters again, including Scott, Lee and Wesley. Scott is still a lovable book nerd, but in SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS he loses the nervousness from his freshmen year and gains a slightly arrogant air. The events of the novel, however, quickly lead him to realize that he doesn’t know everything quite yet --- even if he did manage to survive his freshmen year successfully. Even with his flaws, Scott’s a good character and a good guy that readers will really enjoy. Lee is also just as gothic as she was in the first novel. We see more of her in this book, which is great because she’s such a fun character. She’s highly opinionated and intelligent and a great friend to Scott. She’s a lot friendlier and a little less snarky in this novel than she was in the last, but that’s to be expected since she and Scott are closer friends in this novel --- I did miss some of her snark, though. Overall, Lubar created some quality characters who readers will love. Hopefully we will see more from Lubar --- perhaps a third and fourth novel detailing Scott’s attempts to survive his last two years of high school?

This is a sequel to a good YA read, Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie (which came out in 2007). Scott Hudson has survived freshmen year of high school and sophomore year is upon him. He realizes that he has reached a point where he might actually begin to enjoy high school--until he meets a few of his new 10th grade teachers, gets into some trouble and realizes that his old friend Kyle is still avoiding him. This book has a lot of humor in it, as well as realistic dilemmas faced by high school students. The characters are intelligent, flawed but realistic and interesting to readers. Both high school boys and girls would like this series. I borrowed this book from the town library.
