TJE Miller is Lucas Professor of Power Electronics and the director of the SPEED Consortium a the University of Glasgow U.K. He has 20 years experience in the U.K. and General Electric Research in Schenectady, New York plus teaching/research at the University of Glasgow.

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped us a lot in designing our smoovy micro motors. Technically first class and well written, recommended to anybody who needs a good understanding of motor design issues.

Very good book on brushless motors

This book includes a great amount of detail for designers. Covers winding, materials, magnetics, thermal considerations, etc. Has plenty of equations that are required for design. Both authors are well known and fellows of the IEEE.

The book lacks details of motor construction, which I have not found anywhere yet. Also wish it came with a software tutorial or something. But the best book on motors I have found yet, and I've looked (and bought) a number of them.

There are few Presidents of the United States whose historical image has changed more frequently than that of Andrew Johnson. In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction, he was considered inept and stubborn. After some time, however, Reconstruction was no longer seen as a holy crusade, and Johnson's reputation began to improve. By the 1920's, Johnson had become a great hero who had courageously defended the Constitution against unprincipled radicals. But as circumstances changed again and racial problems were once more weighing upon America's conscience, the seventeenth President's achievements began to appear more questionable. Perhaps he had not been so admirable after all; perhaps his stubborn resistance to radical demands for black suffrage merited disapprobation rather than praise. His portrait was tarnished a second time. Not only was he now labeled a racist, but an inept politician as well.

In Impeachment of a President: Andrew Johnson, the Blacks, and Reconstruction, Trefousse paints a portrait of Johnson as a man who was honest, stubborn, and certain of the justice of his cause. Trefousse argues that Johnson was not the man to inch from the implications of decisions which might interfere temporarily with his long-range aims. Often alienating potential allies, he could have probably achieved more had he cooperated with moderate republicans. In part, he might even have realized his white supremacist aims. Not a Typical Paul Madriani Novel

Steve Martini is a very solid writer of courtroom thrillers, and I've enjoyed most of his novels featuring defense attorney Paul Madriani. One thing I've noticed about Martini's more recent novels (SHADOW OF POWER; DOUBLE TAP) is that the plots have become less realistic and more over-the-top. GUARDIAN OF LIES continues this trend.

GUARDIAN OF LIES is unusual for a Madriani novel because there are few scenes in the courtroom. This is not a true legal thriller. Instead, the plot is more action-oriented, with lawyer Madriani trotting the globe and trying to foil a terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear weapon in the United States.

The result is just okay. There are a lot of big-scale action scenes in GUARDIAN OF LIES, but they aren't strung together in a way that builds any sense of momentum. The characterization is mostly flat. The novel drags in places, and is probably about 100 pages too long. I found this novel engaging enough to finish, but I wasn't kept on the edge of my seat.

GUARDIAN OF LIES is smartly written and serves as a decent entertainment. My hope, however, is that Martini returns to the courtroom for his next book, and comes up wih a more down-to-earth plot than what I found here.

Paul Madriani is at it again. His law firm is more affluent than it used to be, and he gets involved in an international intrigue with Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico and California. Lots of action - will they make it into a movie? - lots of political machinations. A good yarn.

Gripping, amazing, thought-provoking, must read book.

Seriously gripping, amazingly inventive, torturingly upsetting, and so much that is true and must be considered in our every day lives, folded into a fantastic science fiction novel.

I mistakenly thought as I was reading, that this was modeled after Atwood's brilliant "The Handmaid's Tale." No, that was published after "Native Tongue." But if you are familiar with Atwood's work, this awesome novel by Elgin can roughly and inadequately be described as something reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale but with more depth, a few aliens, and lots of linguists.

The themes of human nature, human cruelty, human blindness to motivations, and the dangers and joys of language and words choice are astounding. The feminist themes buried in a book in which the female characters have few legal rights are both subtle and obvious. The book has three interwoven plot lines, any one of which could be an interesting read, but together they are so much more.

I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

Is it a coincidence that the day I am reviewing this book, the Russian parliament voted to decriminalize domestic violence? This book is not about domestic violence, so don't be alarmed, but women's rights are forever under siege, clearly, so this fiction future is not an impossibility, for sure.

Feminist Classic, but just a little dated now

This story of women who create a private language as part of their resistance to a male-dominated society reads well, has good characters (mostly) and kept my attention to the end. But I got a little impatient with the hopelessly chauvinistic men, who seemed to be incredibly blind to the intelligence and abilities of the women all around them.

Some of the descriptions of technology, despite the fact that the story takes place in the 22nd century, are almost delightfully antique, and reading this in 2013 reminds me of the dangers of trying to predict the future of technology. It's still worth reading, if only for the strikingly original premise.

Another failure to deliver

Many authors of erotica deals with the theme of a girls school with mainly lesbian sex and "classical" spanking dicipline. This should at least set higher standards for any new attempt to use this setting. However, also in this novel, we see a lot of spanking, followed sometimes by briefly descibed sex- secenes (a few good exceptions, though), but no deeper feeling of attraction and compassion between the dominant and submissive participants. These feelings ARE described, but one feels that they are used more or less as an excuse to go on with the punishment.
the setting and the theme is very exciting, but this one did not deliver!

It Takes Discipline to Finish it

A disjoint work of mainly lesbian domination. Although relatively well written in terms of grammar and use of the language, there just isn't a coherent thread through the work. Much less interesting to read than the two previous works by the same writer. It gets three stars only because the writing and language usage are above average. The story development is lacking, one would have wished for more involvement by the character Barat, but this was not to be. The ending was essentially telegraphed at the beginning, thus "relieving" the reader of suspense (and a lot of interest as well).

Joyous BDSM fantasia

While I don't have my old copy in front of me to quote from chapter and verse, I can certainly say that "Discipline of the Private House" is one of the best volumes of erotica I have ever read. Esme Ombreux writes fluently and with a definite sense of fun about the wild shenanigans of a covert society of BDSM afficianadoes who routinely draw new, naive budding sensualists into their world of polyvalent thrills. Unlike some Nexus titles, there's nothing really "mean spirited" about all these goings on, but there is plenty of explicit and imaginative sexuality. Of course it's no surprise that spirited Jem prevails over her challenges in sex slavery by the end, but what's so delightful is to follow her journey and that of her new friend, a trembling Middle Eastern ingenue who discovers several thrilling new penchants. Loads of spanking, bondage, costumes, toys, piercings, and role-play abound, along with saucy dominatrixes and sobbing, delighted subs. I'm sorry the other readers didn't enjoy this so much, but I've found the three volumes of the Private House series that I've read all delightful, and none more so than this. Like the best Black Lace titles, it's a spirited romp with a kinky spin on female power. I think this is one of the best volumes of its kind.

To hear Shea tell the story, he's about the only guy in South Boston who can keep his trap shut—including Bulger, who turned rat and is now in hiding—once the cuffs are on. EASILY the worst of the whole Whitey/Southie genre

I am SO glad I read this via a library and didn't pay a cent for it! Johnny Shea is the ultimate example of the self-serving, ignorant Southie project product. Absolutely NO redeeming value to Shea or his fictions. An embarassing project, one which should never have been put to publication. In a world of insecure, self-important criminals attempting to cash in on their connections to Bulger, Shea stands apart as uniquely loathsome. A MUST not-read.

In The Southie/Irish Mob Genre, This Is Only Okay

If you're just getting into what has now become a genre of Irish/Southie/True Crime books, definitely start with the ones done by the writer/reporters, ie, Black Mass, Westies, and Paddy Whacked - books with multiple sources and footnotes and everything - instead of the biographies. I've now read all the Southie books except for Kevin Weeks', which I'm only kind of looking forward to after this one and Pat Nee's. This is the conclusion I have come to.

If you're just interested in this book, it is, essentially, one big self-inflicted ego stroke minus numerous details that would have added to the intrigue of the tale. There are almost no interesting, well-developed or enlightening stories aside from the tales of prison life.

The biggest thing I came away with from this book is that Shea feels the need to tell you how tough he is at least once in every single chapter. Frankly, it gets tiresome and takes away from the story. Shea turns from a would be protagonist (if you buy into the "admirable" qualities the main character portrays) into someone you hope will at least bring something redeeming to the table in the end. It doesn't happen.

This one had potential. Unfortunately, the egomania, the lack of details, and the lack of developed stories take away from the impact.

As mentioned, read the compilation books first, followed by All Souls (truly excellent), Street Soldier (what this book could have been, ie, very authentic and interesting, even if horrifying), and A Criminal and An Irishman (Nee, it seems, is one of the only genuine stand-up guys). From there, the rest are pretty much the same.
