Although not especially successful in its stated aim of achieving a global, comparative, chronological overview of world art, it makes provocative juxtapositions. Thus, a Hopi pueblo is set alongside a Frank Lloyd Wright house; an American romantic landscape painting faces an example of Gustave Courbet's realism; a Christian cemetery fresco is counterpoised by paintings from a third-century Jewish synagogue in Mesopotamia. But it is left largely to the reader to supply the connections. Commentaries are sometimes blandly didactic, at other times aptly insightful. In Velazquez's The Water Carrier , we are told, "the simple act of offering, accepting and consuming a glass of water gains dignity and import." Moments like this make the volume worthwhile. Wilkins is director of the University Art Gallery at the University of Pittsburgh; Schultz, an associate arts professor at West Virginia University.

A Whole New Dimension

I bought this book for my art history class and I absolutely love it! The book taught me many great things about the art pieces all around the world. It is like a whole new dimension of life that I have never experienced before! I wish one day I can see some art pieces in person to actually get a better sense of the art itself. I recommend this book to those who love art and who wants a better understanding from art of the past!

Surprisingly good read!

I bought this book for my Art History Survey I & II courses, and was surprised at how well I read it. Usually I say, "I'm gonna do my readings and do great in class!" but in all actuality I attempt to read and get bored then start to do something else. This book reads almost like Spark Notes to other Art History books, leaving you with a lot of important information about the subject and little tedious details that you won't need in class. I even substituted this book for the one required for my contemporary art history course and did very well in it, I would recommend this book to any Art/Art History major. It's really well written, laid out, and interesting.

Decent overview of art history

I used this textbook for a required intro to art history course. Even though I was supposed to get a much later edition of the book, I ordered this one because it was significantly less expensive. It turned out to be almost the same as the later edition, so I didn't need to get a more expensive new one. It summed up a lot of different western art, and a little bit of eastern art as well. It was kind of weird how many typos there were in the book, though.

Disappointing

Very disappointed with this purchase. It took FOREVER to receive the item. I paid over$50 PLUS shipping for a book that retailed for $19.95 according to the ISBN number on the back when I received it. - Complete ripoff! Will make sure I don't purchase books from this site/agent again.

I would NOT recommend purchasing this book - the quick easy meals are the same ones that came in a sample cookbook with the product. The others in this book are to fancy for everyday meals - which is why I bought the Ninja cooking system in the first place! Busy family that needs quick dinners because we still try to eat as a family. You are better off looking on web for meals to make.

NINJA 3 IN 0NE SYSTEM

I have used this four times now and really do like the versatility of being able to sear and slow cook all in one pot. However the High setting takes a long time to heat up, at least 5-7 min (the book/guide says 2-3 min) and it doesn't sear the meat as effectively as on the stove top but does an adequate job of browning the meat, just takes longer than on the stove.
The steam bake function will cook muffins but not brown them like an oven will. I found they turned out moist and light but not browned, however I've only used this function once, so will try it on some other items before I make a true assessment to this function.
The roasting feature is next on my list so will try that this week.
So far, the slow cooker fuction works the best, I've used it 3x and the meals turned out perfectly.
I would recommend this to a friend for the simplicity, ease of use this small appliance brings to the kitchen.

About the Author
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Before retiring, Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years, where he honed an approach to teaching and writing that forms the foundation for his textbooks. Mike has been writing for over 35 years and currently has fifteen books in print. His books have been awarded both Texty and McGuffey awards from TAA.

Mike is a member of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America and the Text and Academic Authors Association, and received the TAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His influence in the field of mathematics extends to his four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for a college textbook publishing company; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

This is a nice book and provides some background into fashion ads through the years. I bought it to acquire more ideas for my visual projects with the goal of gaining at least 1 new idea. I achieved this goal.

We had one of these in our room at an upscale hotel in Dallas, and thought it would make a great coffee table book. Regardless of your age, these ads will either bring back memories, or if nothing else educate you on the marketing approach of the times with very familiar products. I am not a "marketing" person, actually an Accountant, and if this impressed me, it should impress anyone !

Beautifully and delicately written!

When I opened this book my intention was to read a few chapters and then quickly go to bed. Little did I know Caylie had other ideas for my evening. A little more than 3 hours later, with tears streaming down my face, I had completed Parting Chances. The book was heart-wrenchingly wonderful and I simply could not put it down! Caylie has beautifully and delicately written a book that will tug at your heartstrings and show you the true meaning of love and acceptance. The impact it had on me was huge. I laughed out loud, I cried, and I loved every single word. I can’t recommend this one enough.

I want to marry Eli and have his babies.

If you liked Choose Us, you should read this book. If you didn't like Choose Us, you should read this book. For me, Parting Chances was a complete departure from Caylie Marcoe's debut novel. While I enjoyed Choose Us, I loved Parting Chances. It's darker, deeper, and the writing is more refined. The author was somehow able to balance out a sad story with the perfect amount of humor and light-hearted moments. Every element of this story worked together beautifully.

My prediction is that Parting Chances is going to be a huge success for this author.

Wow, what a heart wrencher. After Caylie's first book, a fairly feel-good lighthearted romance that I thoroughly enjoyed, I think I was expecting more of the same. But boy did she surprise me - and in a good way. This book is deep. It's serious. And I can't remember the last time I loved a book so much that made me bawl so hard.

Caylie's writing is awesome, particularly in the second half of this book. It's so honest, raw and real that you know it comes from first-hand experience, which makes it all the more poignant. It feels like she went on a personal journey through this and despite the crushingly sad subject she has the amazing knack of weaving hope, courage and enduring love through every chapter. She broke me down only to bring me back up and I absolutely loved this book, even though it made me cry buckets.

Now for those who don't like to have the storyline revealed I'd stop here. But those who like to get a little teaser before they read, keep going.

Haley's mom is ill - dying - at a time when she should be focusing on life at college, enjoying her independence, making mistakes, staying out all night, kissing boys, looking to the future and having the time of her life. And whilst this is the last thing she wants to be doing this is exactly what her mom wants for her. So she tries. She moves out of home, moves in with her bestie, gets a job and studies hard.

And although she's not exactly got the social life of the century, she does meet (or rediscover) a boy. Eli already knows that he could be absolutely perfect for her and he just wants to be there for her but she won't let her guard down and she won't let him in. Her heart is breaking at the thought of losing her mum and she knows it won't survive another blow but will she survive this without him ?

Wright has done his homework

First I have to mention that the author, Douglas Wright, is British, so that some of the idioms, sentence structure and word usage may not be familiar to readers outside the UK.

I will give Wright credit, where credit it due. He has done his homework, although that homework was most likely reading and viewing previously documented DiCaprio articles and interviews. Wright wishes the reader to believe that many of DiCaprio's co-stars were interviewed for this work, (Kate Winslet, Russell Crowe, Martin Scorsese, Clare Danes) those "interviews" were most likely obtained in the same manner as those of DiCaprio. Thankfully, Wright has placed a lot of interesting material between two covers, but he also included a lot of non-interesting material.

The best portions and most interesting chapters of the book are what appear to be behind the scenes and on-set of DiCaprio's films. How specific film projects were chosen. Why one film was
chosen over another (American Psycho, Titanic, and no super-hero films). There are some entertaining stories relayed during the making of Leo's films, but again, all the conversations may have been previously documented. These make the book a worth while effort.

The least interesting and what I felt didn't really need to be investigated further, are DiCaprio's various relationships. Here Wright establishes himself as a tabloid expert, but yet again, giving credit to The Star, E!, World News or Entertainment Tonight. That simply isn't what interested me.

My biggest issue with this book is the repetition. Several times I found that I was reading exactly the same paragraph as I had read in an earlier chapter, word for word. There are also times
the author uses the exact quote from another chapter. There are a few typos and additionally, I am uncomfortable when an author states that a source "wished to remain anonymous."

Although there are issues, this was still an enjoyable read (less than half a day's time) but if you are looking for some profound new insight from the man himself, this isn't the place to find it.

A chronologically organized review of Leo Literature

I started reading this book more out of curiosity than anything. Sure, it was entertaining and not horribly written- but like a reviewer has said before me, this is more a collection of interview material and pre-existing articles than anything else. I often felt like I was reading through a tabloid. It doesn't seem like the author has interviewed Leonardo DiCaprio at all and he seems to be just quoting things Leo has said to other people. Thumbs up on all the research, but I felt a bit cheated. The pictures inside the book are all mostly public stock and taken at premieres and award receptions.The story behind movies and behind-the-scenes material are interesting but all the things you'd find in the Special Features of your DVD. Having been awed last year by the biography of Steve Jobs, I guess this doesn't even come close to competing. And I'm a big Leo fan so this was quite disappointing.
If the content itself was in my opinion lacking, what was furthermore disappointing were the typos, and as this reviewer before me pointed out, duplicate word-for-word quotes and passages even from one chapter to the other. It's rather insulting to be honest. If this is not horrible editing I don't know what is. And then there is that statement about the story behind the Apple Logo (Alan Turing) which is completely false and perpetration of an urban myth. These few things make a book that I would probably normally give a 2 dowgraded to a 1 and I unfortunately would not recommend it as a worthwhile read at all, no matter how Leobsessed one might be.
