I just love this author's stories. This one reminds me a lot of the excellent 1930's romantic comedies with zany characters, a witty and confused main character. I totally recommend this book!

Excellent Resource

I'll update this book as I work through it more. I will start off saying that the book difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is a vast improvement in terms of clarity and order. The information is similar in both books, but it is arranged better.

There are three books that are most used in my library. Between all three of these, I can always find a good answer. They are Stimson for basic subjects, Skolnik for more advanced and this book for the Radar Analysis. In this book, the emphasis is on analysis and predicting radar performance. Currently, I work modeling and simulation but have done algorithm analysis in the past.

The book has Matlab code that is downloaded from the publisher site. The code is well written for the purpose, but not useful for deeper system analysis. This book will get you on the write path. It's not going to give you all the answers. You're going to have to take it the rest of the way. But, this book will get you in the right direction providing the needed information to begin. This is a very advanced topic in my opinion. The author does a good job getting the point across. But, you'll definitely have to get your knuckles bloodied to get it.

As stated, I'll add more as I get through the book. So far it is a highly recommended purchase.

Heller's illustrations, based on extensive research of Korean art, are filled with images of enchanted animals, traditional costumes and, of course, pear blossoms. Lavish geometric borders combine intense greens, oranges and purples; the spreads, while making use of Western perspectives, retain a busy, Asian sense of pattern. Shirley Climo's love of folklore began in her childhood and has provided the background for many of her children's books, such as The Korean Cinderella, Magic & Mischief: Tales from Cornwall, A Treasury of Princesses: Princess Tales from Around the World, A Treasury of Mermaids: Mermaid Tales from Around the World, and Someone Saw a Spider: Spider Facts and Folktales, an NCTE Teacher's Choice and Library of Congress Best Children's Book that was originally inspired by her research for Cobweb Christmas. Mrs. Climo and her husband live in Los Altos, California.

Shirley Climo is the author of many children's books including The Egyptian Cinderella and King of the Birds, both illustrated by Ruth Heller, and T.J.'s Ghost. She lives in Los Altos, CA.

Ruth Heller travelled to Korea to do the research for this book. She is the author-illustrator of Up, Up and Away, among many other books for children, and lives in San Francisco, CA.

Another Cinderella

There are as many as a half dozen versions of Cinderella in Korea. The Korean Cinderella by Shirley Climo is a combination of three Korean variations.

To honor her birth, a pear tree is planted and the newborn baby is named Pear. She is beautiful and loved by her elderly mother and father. When Pear's mother dies, her father remarries a woman with a daughter the same age as Pear. Beautiful Pear's stepmother is jealous of her stepdaughter's beauty and requires her to perform many impossible chores, while her own daughter, Peony watches.

With the help of magical creatures (frog, sparrow, and black oxen) Pear successfully completes each chore and is able to attend the festival. On the way to the festival she loses her shoe. The magistrate sees the beautiful Pear and calls out to her. Believing he is yelling at her, she runs away without her shoe. At the festival the magistrate looks for the girl without the shoe. And we can guess the end of the story.

The Korean Cinderella is recognizable and is a captivating variation of the American version. The paintings are colorful and lush. Children will love the story and thoroughly enjoy the illustrations. This is for children between the ages of five and nine.

When I was in elementary school I would always go to the school library to borrow books. This is how I discovered this gem in third grade. I loved fairy tales at the times and always did everything I could to get more. When I found this book I immediately decided that I had to read it. Boy was that a good decision or what. 1) The pictures were beautifully drawn, 2) I loved the story, and 3) It was all in all amazing. It is different but the same in some ways than the American version. There is no fairy godmother. That was the only disappointment I felt at the time because I loved the idea that anyone could have a fairy godmother but even so, it was a marvelous story and you'll definitely enjoy it.

About the Author
Anne Cameron was born in Nanaimo, BC. She began writing at an early age, starting with theatre scripts and screenplays. In 1979, her film Dreamspeaker, directed by Claude Jutra, won seven Canadian Film Awards, including best script. After being published as a novel, Dreamspeaker went on to win the Gibson Award for Literature. She has published more than 30 books, including the underground classic Daughters of Copper Woman, its sequel, Dzelarhons, novels, stories, poems and legends - for adults and children. Her most recent novels are Family Resemblances, Hardscratch Row, and a new, revised edition of Daughters of Copper Woman. She lives in Tahsis, BC

My first reaction to this book was that it was one of the most beautifully written books I have read, one that cries out to be read aloud. Anne Cameron's sentences read like poetry rather than prose, very lyrical and rhythmical. There's no way its content could be fiction; she must have talked with the women memorizers who remember the oral legends for the Vancouver Nootka Native American tribes. Copper Woman is both the mother of the tribe from whom they are all descended and the respected Old Woman that is within each woman helping her to endure, to remember the old secrets and teachings, and to relearn any lost secrets. Copper Woman is there when the "keestadores" turned the Nootka world upside down and is there yet today as the Woman's Society shares its knowledge and soft power with all the women of the world.

My favorite all time book.

This book contains stories from the native people
of Vancouver Island, retold by Anne Cameron
much as they had been told to her.

You will find it is a collection of stories, many about
Copperwoman. Though she is more diety than human,
her joy and pain are terribly real.

Woven throughout the stories are bits and pieces
of the present day. As you read you find yourself
weaving in and out from past to present and then back
to the past again. As I progressed through the book I felt
a deep sense of connection with women of all time.

Enchanting and painful history

The story that is being told here, goes directly to the heart. The whole book breathes a feeling of ancient indian mythology and knowledge. It is enchanting to read about this vast amount of indian knowledge and about the completeness of their view on the world, which is so different from 'western' approaches. It is also painful to read about the losses as a result of wars and as a result of their being unique and not adapted. But it is an important lesson to see how they deal with this loss, and how they can place themselves in a changing and evolving world, where civilizations rise, flourish and decline and where everyone has its place in time.

Great graphics and descriptions

This book has great graphics of these flies and interesting description of their development ,etc. Hair wing salmon flies have become more popular as the exotic feathers for traditional salmon flies have become more difficult to obtain and more laborious to tie. I loose so many flies that spending hours on the bench for one fly isn't worth it. Hair wing flies are faster to tie and provide more action in the water. There are other books for traditional feather winged salmon flies that are works of art. Chris Mann has several books that cover feather wings too. Hair winged flies make great steelhead flies as well.

Which makes all illustrations very fake to me. What it does is that it has all the recipes you may need if you already are an advanced tier, if you are looking to emulate someone else's tie and get a good look at a fly's real looks, that is not the book for you.

Thorough and real, Vail's book is a good read

As a Hammond B3 player for more years than I'd like to admit, I WILL admit I enjoyed this book tremendously. Now, it's not a tech manual, but I thought the book was laid out very well. It gave a good description of who Laurens Hammond was, such as being inventor of the electric clock. When doing research there's always gonna be some folks out there who may disagree with some statement, but that's just natural. I think that Mark Vail did an incredibly thorough job of researching this instrument and its history. He showed that he has a personal interest in it as well. A lot of people can just write a book 'cause they're paid to, but Mark has passion for the B. He showed it all the way through. I liked the reproductions of some of the original brochures, with the pictures of the different models. I remember those from when I was a kid -- my mother went to buy a Hammond and brought those brochures home. Quite often when I'm talking with someone about a particular model, I'll take out Mark's book and show them the photos and descriptions. He gives the year the models were built, what their price was -- that sort of stuff is very helpful and just plain fun to know.

Comprehensive Hammond and Leslie Info Under One Roof

Previous to the publcation of Vail's book, newcomers seeking to penetrate the mystique surrounding the Hammond organ had to rely on a diffuse smattering of sources for information. Most such sources are commercial: technicians, restorers, shops dealing in vintage musical gear, etc. Though many of these specialists are deeply knoweldgable and provide great products and services, it's a small and competitive community, which can make it difficult for the curious novice to get objective information. As a younger keyboard nut, I personally bugged enough of those people to learn that most do not have the time or energy to play the role of educator, especially if a sale is not imminent.
Playing this role is exactly the point, though, when you have a book to sell, and Vail approaches this task with a thoroughness, integrity, and love of the subject that make this one of the best books of its kind. No. it's not an exhaustive technical reference, nor the end-all of any debate about the Hammond. It's not meant as such, any more than a docent-guided tour of a famous museum is meant to replace a PhD in art history. Rather, it's the beginning of a journey, and for this subject, a better beginning than we've ever had.
Among Vail's many sources are longtime Hammond exec Alan Young, who also shed light on the legacy of John Hanert, the engineer who made many of Laurens Hammond's ideas work, rotary speaker inventor Don Leslie, and a who's who of the jazz, rock, and gospel players that imprinted the Hammond-Leslie sound on our consciousness to the degree that even people who've never heard the name of the instrument recognize "that sound." While I haven't fact-checked every page, it is simply absurd to suggest any generalization that the sources are suspect or the information inaccurate.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and informative read that can save you a ton of legwork in approaching the realm of the mighty Hammond. The better part of a century lies between us and its conception, and some current repairers and restorers scrape part numbers off components so their work can't be duplicated. In such a world, Vail's book is as objective as it gets.

Buy this book

I had borrowed a copy of this book from a friend, and after skimming it, decided then and there I had to have my own copy; so I bought one.
It's great to see that someone took the time to research and write such an informative and interesting book on a very "niche" piece of the music industry.
It should be required reading for anyone interested in the Hammond organ, and it's history. Because of the amount of pictures and quotes, it makes for very "easy" reading. I finished it in about one day, and still refer to it!
I recommend it, highly!

A great start to an intriguing series!

What an amazing book! Young adult and supernatural are a couple of my favorite types of books to read. The main character, Kayla, grows and changes as a protagonist wonderfully, and you can't help but to root for her. The powers that everyone has makes me wish I had powers too! Finding Home expertly captures the angst, stress, desires, and triumphs of the teenagers, in a way that made me feel like I was right alongside Kayla, Lillith, Angel, and all the other kids in the house as they fight to save their home. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Pleasantly engaging

I wasn't sure what to expect in a young adult novel these days, as I rarely read them; however, Finding Home proved to be a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the story and felt the characters, Kayla and Lilith to be both interesting and engaging. I look forward to following them along in their subsequent journeys.

About the Author
Philippe Desfray is the Co-founder of and Vice President of R&D at Softeam. Internationally renowned expert and author of several books on modeling, Philippe is a contributing member of the OMG, where he participates in the elaboration of a number of standards, notably UML and BPMN. He has been involved in model driven development research, standardization, and tooling for nearly two decades.

Gilbert Raymond is a Senior Consultant and head of Softeam’s Information System and Methods division. Gilbert is an expert in Information Systems and BPM, and is TOGAF 9-certified.

TOGAF is the de facto standard for Architectural work. This is a good book. It covers vast area from a pragmatic perspective. I read this book on Safari Books Online.

Poorly written

This is poorly written book. The authors have done a bad job with both TOGAF and UML. I purchased it mainly to study how to use UML for creating TOGAF artifacts. I am disappointed to see how many non-UML notations have been used in the examples in the book. As an Enterprise Architect and Data Modeler I discourage people from using non-standard notations on the diagrams. The whole point for creating Enterprise Architecture is to bring standardization in the way an organization communicates about is present and future.

I recommend that these authors study UML and then revise this book thoroughly.
