Love and growing up in the Plains
By Patrick
I was looking for a good read that had a setting anywhere west of the Mississippi. I wanted a storyline that would make me laugh, think, and maybe weep. I got all three in the wonderful book, "Plainsong".
The setting is the plains country several hours from Denver in a mythical town of Holt. The main characters are fashioned straight out of the dust and tumbleweed that make up the countryside. These are common people concerned with problems and issues that are found world-wide. But, here, amidst the rough cattlemen, the bored teenagers, the forgotten old women, the restless wife, the lonely school teacher and two growing boys...boys who watch the problems of the adults in silence but who sometimes ask sad questions like: "When is mom coming home?" When you read these words, your heart can feel the pain that comes with the loss of innocence.
That could be the subtext of this novel. The loss of innocence. Two crusty old ranchers lose the innocence of their isolation. A teenage girl looses her innocence on a hillside...and becomes pregnant, the loss of innocence of a teacher trying to do his job but is confronted with the very ignorance he is trying to erase.
It seems everyone looses something in this book. But they gain other things, ways of thinking and coping with what adulthood can do to people.
The characters play out their roles in a landscape that is lacking with lush greenery. Everything is straw-covered and dusty. Guthrie looses a wife but gains a real more meaningful love. Seventeen-year-old Victoria is tempted by the Big City but begins to find trust and true affection in the unlikely of places.
My only complaint about the book is that we get to hear what the inner voices of the main characters are saying. We hear the few words they mutter, but what's in their hearts? I would really like to know that.

My very favorite novel by Kent Haruf
By Preston's Mom
This is my very favorite novel by Kent Haruf. I love all his works, but this is tragically beautiful and the ways in which he manages to have the characters cross paths is ingenious. As always, his prose is quiet, simple and yet so very compelling. You will LOVE this book!

This Short is a Slam Dunk!
By Kristi Cramer
It has been a long time since I read a book in one sitting. Even a novella. Room 1208 hooked me right away and didn't let me go until the end.

It wrenched some tears out of me, and got me rather hot under the collar, too. I was so rooting for Maggie and Jason that I didn't even mind the super sweet happy ending.

There were elements that I found a little over the top, but then again, I have to say I'm a sucker for this, a too good to be true romance. So what. I was (way) into it while I read it. That is what counts.

This story was very well written. I didn't get distracted by any language errors or abuse, the pacing was superb, the characters very well developed, especially given the length of the story. Well done, Sophia Renny. I have gotten pretty stingy with my 5 Star reviews, but Room 1208 definitely rates.

5 delightful stars!

*Review first published on Goodreads*

Some authors can spin magic into their short stories. And Sophia Renny did exactly that. Intriguing and riveting right from the beginning, it left me feeling contented on this glorious, rainy Boxing Day. The perfect book to curl up to on this dreary day.

Sweet yet alluring, Room 1208 tells a story of two individuals who discovered something they didn't realise were missing in their lives. Clouded by a trying past, 'Joan' and 'Don' took the first step into betterment the moment 'Don' knocked on the door of 1208, and 'Joan' opened the door to him.

Conclusion: A very sweet tale and I'm quite satisfied with it just being a standalone. This is one book I wouldn't mind paying $0.99 for. Grab it now while it's free!

Now I have to check and see if Ms. Renny has any other books out.

Take an Unvarnished Look Back
By David Valentino
More than just a peek at the life of a mid-20th century housewife's life, this book provides plenty of insight into life in general throughout the 1950s. Though it focuses on life in England after WWII and through to the 60s, much of what Sheila Hardy reveals was true of life in the U.S.A. The difference comes in the period immediately following the end of the war, when the British faced rebuilding parts of their cities and their industries.

You'll find a nearly complete social history here: dating, marriage, setting up a household, the daily routine of life, how a housewife spent her day, how she existed without conveniences we take for granted today, shopping and style, leisure activities, health and beauty, the status of women, and more.

Hardy writes with humor, mimicking, in many cases, the astonishment 50s women might display at certain aspects of 21st century life. Take hosiery, for example: "The idea that one day she would be pulling on an all-in-one nylon garment that resembled a pair of elongated, shapeless bags grafted on to a larger one that came up to her waist would have been quite incomprehensible as well as seen as totally unhygienic."

In many cases, much of what women had to put up with no longer exists. Among these trials are the chimney sweep. In England, people burned coal in fireplaces before the general adoption of central electric heating. At the end of winter, the housewife would prepare for the annual call of the sweep. "To start with the sweep always announced he would arrive early so arrangements had to be made to get breakfast over and done with before he came. Then furniture had to be covered in dust sheets, and the curtains taken down ready to be washed along with anything else in the room, such as the glass light shade that might pick up a coating of soot. If it was a fine day the hearthrug would be taken outside to hang on the washing line, ready to be given a good beating before going back to its place, and old sheets were put down to cover the carpet or linoleum entirely. If all this seems excessive, one has to bear in mind that the sweep himself wore clothes that were covered with soot and that once the sweeping operation began there was no knowing what might happen." That last sounds ominous, indeed.

All in all, an informative, often delightful rendering of life in an era often glamorized but perhaps not quite as glamorous as we'd like to believe. Includes lists of popular movies, plays, books, music, and the like in the back, illustrating the reach and influence of American culture.

Worthy Reading - A Very Revealing View of Post-WWII Family Life in Great Britain
By rcpromise
I really enjoyed this book. The transaction was smooth and the product was as advertised. Only thing I would add is that this book is about 1950s wives in Great Britain, not America. This actually turned out to be a good thing because I was able to see how different life was for families in Great Britain during and after the War, how much better off it was in America, how much more freedom from the Government there was. A very revealing discourse.

Dress Code: The Naked Truth About Fashion, by Mari Grinde Arntzen

As Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Fashion is a form of ugliness so absolutely unbearable that we have to alter it every six months.” And yet it serves to make us beautiful, or at least make us feel beautiful. In this book, Mari Grinde Arntzen asks how and why this is—how can fashion simultaneously attract us to its glamour and repel us with its superficiality and how being called “fashionable” can be at once a compliment and an insult.

Arntzen guides us through the major figures and brands of today’s fashion industry, showing how they shape us and in turn why we love to be shaped by them. She examines both everyday, affordable “fast fashion” brands, as well as the luxury market, to show how fashion commands a powerful influence on every socioeconomic level of our society. Stepping into our closets with us, she thinks about what happens when we get dressed: why fashion can make us feel powerful, beautiful, and original at the same time that it forces us into conformity. Stripping off the layers of the world’s fifth largest industry, garment by garment, she holds fashion up as a phenomenon, business, and art, exploring the questions it forces us to ask about the body, image, celebrity, and self-obsession.

Ultimately, Arntzen asks the most direct question: what is fashion? How has it taken such a powerful hold on the world, forever propelling us toward its concepts of beauty?

May interest fashionistas, but it's a dense personal essay on fashion that seems to go in circles.
By lyndonbrecht
This is a very difficult little book to characterize. It's essentially a personal, meditative essay on fashion. It's not impenetrable, but after reading it, I am not sure if Pierce is apologizing for fashion, saying conspicuous consumption is unsustainable, or that fashion is natural and useful.

Pierce does have some good lines. Here's one: "Kate Middleton dressed like a princess; therefore no one doubted that she could perform the job of one." That suggests that people do read a book by its cover, or perhaps that a savvy person can lever herself into a position where fate is likely to strike for the positive.

Skim a section or two of the book before you buy it. It may appeal to readers interested in fashion. Note that, unlike most other books by this publisher, it has no illustrations. It's a barebones essay.

British Idealism: A History, by W. J. Mander

W. J. Mander presents the first ever synoptic history of British Idealism, the philosophical school which dominated English-language philosophy from the 1860s through to the early years of the following century. Offering detailed examination of the origins, growth, development, and decline of this mode of thinking, British Idealism: A History restores to its proper place this now almost wholly forgotten period of philosophical history. Through clear explanation of its characteristic concepts and doctrines, and paying close attention to the published works of its philosophers, the volume provides a full-length history of this vital school for those wishing to fill a gap in their knowledge of the history of British Philosophy, while its detailed notes and bibliography will guide the more dedicated scholar who wishes to examine further their distinctive brand of philosophy. By covering all major philosophers involved in the movement (not merely the most famous ones like Bradley, Green, McTaggart, and Bosanquet but the lesser known figures like the Caird brothers, Henry Jones, A.S.Pringle-Pattison, and R.B.Haldane) and by looking at all branches of philosophy (not just the familiar topics of ethics, political thought, and metaphysics but also the less well documented work on logic, religion, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy), British Idealism: A History brings out the movement's complex living pattern of unity and difference; something which other more superficial accounts have tended to obscure.

This text is a good overview of business technology. I would, however, recommend more frequent revisions due to the fact that IT changes so quickly. It is somewhat verbose and duplicates to some degree the text Electronic Commerce 10th edition, 2013.

Outdated and Longwinded
By Brian
I dislike this book for a few reasons. But before getting into that, I'll say what this book has going for it. Occasionally, the flowcharts do make things jive a bit more in my mind. Also, all of the information is technically valid.

Yet, there is much to dislike about this book. I suppose this is acting as a warning for students, since you don't have a choice. So here we go... All of the statistics in this book are about 3-4 years out of date. Many of the technologies mentioned in this book are outdated or obsolete, so it isn't very useful in certain areas. But my biggest complaint has nothing to do with the timeliness of the information. Everything in this book is broken down into painful detail. Lists of things 9 items long, go on for 7-8 pages. It all starts to blur together. There are literally 3 pages dedicated to telling you what plan, do, check, and act mean. The author makes no attempt to convey the information in an intuitive way. Rather, he shotguns information at you and hopes something sticks. Be prepared for hours upon hours of droopy-eyed reading friends. Best of luck.

The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential Candidate, by Gwenda Blair

The story of three generations of Trumps in a “copiously researched” (The New York Times) narrative and an account of the presidential candidate’s extraordinary path to success. “Rich, detailed, and informative, and not just for Trump loyalists or detractors” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

This richly detailed account of the Trump family reflects America’s transformation from a land of striving immigrants to a world in which the aura of wealth alone can guarantee a fortune. The Trumps begins with a portrait of Donald's immigrant grandfather Frederick Trump, a restaurant owner who amassed the first Trump fortune by providing miners with food, liquor, and easy access to women during the Klondike gold rush. His son, Fred, took advantage of New Deal policy, using government subsidies and loopholes to construct hugely successful housing developments in the 1940s and 1950s. The profits from those enterprises paved the way for Donald's roller-coaster ride into the new century.

With his talent for what he calls “truthful hyperbole,” Donald Trump turned the deal-making know-how of his forebears into an art form. By describing Donald’s much-publicized life in the context of his family, Gwenda Blair adds an important dimension to a glitzy, larger-than-life contradictory figure known around the world as The Donald.

Amazon.com Review
As she did in Almost Golden: Jessica Savitch and the Selling of Television News, journalist Gwenda Blair examines a historical trend through an individual story--or in this case, three--profiling a trio of very different men who happened to be grandfather, father, and son. Friedrich Trump (1869-1918), a German-born barber who got rich providing lodging, food, and female companionship to Klondike gold miners, founded the family real estate empire in Queens, New York. Fred Trump (1905-99) took advantage of new government programs to build affordable urban housing and make lots of money for himself. Donald, born in 1946, was just as interested in being famous as in being wealthy. His first big coup, the Grand Hyatt hotel, opened in 1980, launching a decade of extravagant acquisitions (including two Atlantic City casinos and the Plaza Hotel) that made "the Donald" a byword for '80s excess. Blair conscientiously covers Donald's flamboyant personal life, from the womanizing through the stormy marriage to Ivana and the notorious romance with Marla Maples. Her sometimes portentous prose suits the pumped-up style of the man who promoted his projects by promoting himself with everything from a ghostwritten autobiography, The Art of the Deal, to a board game bearing his name. But the author's main interest, and her book's principal fascination, lies in tracing the evolution of American real estate development over the course of the 20th century, as bare-knuckled individual entrepreneurship gave way to business in partnership with government, which was in turn replaced by high-stakes financial manipulation using image to shape reality. Blair may well be right when she claims that the Trumps' saga constitutes "a singular history of American capitalism itself." --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
This well-balanced, serious examination of the Trump family business proves its mettle by not mentioning The Donald's love life until it approaches page 300, and even then Blair is more concerned about Ivana's influence on Trump's business sense than on his hormones. While Donald is the star of Blair's work, his father and grandfather emerge as colorful characters in their own right. Arriving from Germany in 1885, Friedrich Trump spent a brief time in New York before striking out for Alaska, where he operated combined saloon-restaurant-brothels in several gold rush towns. When things went sour, Trump returned to New York, where he opened a modest real estate office in Queens that his son, Fred Jr., would greatly expand. Taking advantage of government programs designed to spur construction during the Depression, the middle Trump made his reputation by constructing well-built houses and apartments for the middle class. Following WWII, when the government was eager to find ways to ease the housing shortage, he used his contacts in city government to become a multimillionaire and one of the biggest landlords in Brooklyn and Queens. But his son wasn't interested in the boroughs; Donald used his father's money to make his fortune in Manhattan and then in Atlantic City. Blair documents the painstaking process whereby Trump transformed the Commodore Hotel to the Grand Hyatt and made his first mark in New York. With access to the Trump family and their business associates, Blair (bestselling author of Almost Gone) gives a first-rate, firsthand account of Donald Trump's rise, fall and resurrection as a business tycoon, while also exploring the motivation that drove him to risk it all to seek even more fame and fortune. Agent, Gloria Loomis. (Sept.)

From Booklist
It is hard to imagine Donald Trump sharing billing with anyone, even if it is his father and grandfather. True, "the Donald" did devote a dozen pages to his father, Fred, in Trump: The Art of the Deal (1987) and acknowledge him as the most important influence on his life. In fact, Fred helped bail Donald out of several financial tight spots. Now Blair provides this first in-depth look at Fred Trump as well as Friedrich Trump, Donald's grandfather. The author had the cooperation of Donald and other members of the Trump family, but her book is extensively researched and surprisingly candid in its assessment of the Trumps' business successes and failures and of their personal lives. The eldest Trump immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 16 in 1885, thrived as a saloonkeeper, and ran a brothel during the Klondike gold rush before moving to New York, where he became wealthy selling real estate. His son, taking advantage of government subsidies, got rich by building "ordinary homes for ordinary people" in Queens and Brooklyn. Donald brought us up to date about himself with The Art of the Comeback (1997). But Blair, who is also the author of Almost Golden: Jessica Savitch and the Selling of Television News (1988), provides a new and revealing look that takes into account the early influences on his life. There is certain to be demand for this book not only among people interested in business but also among readers who follow the celebrity TV shows and the gossip columns in the print media. Interest Is Not Where You Might Expect
By taking a rest
The first generation you will read about was never allowed to reach its conclusion, due to an unfortunate early death. The second and third generations of this grandfather, father, and son trio are much longer. The second generation too has recently come to a close after a very long and successful life, in excess of 93 years, and the verdict on the third is still evolving. There is no question where the business acumen was at its greatest, the talent rested with Mr. Fred Trump, the second of the three men, and his story is the one of substance. The grandfather never had a chance to play out what likely would have been a very successful life, but during the time he was a businessman he was creative, bold, and gutsy as any pioneer.
Donald Trump is certainly the most well known, for marketing himself is a large part of whom he is and what he does. He is a man who can only speak in superlatives about anything he is involved in, even if some grand and prominent project bears his name and little else. The name on a building has very little to do with who owns it, who paid for it, or who made it happen. Donald Trump's primary business is Donald Trump. His flair for promotion and obsession with how he is perceived has become his career. There is no question he has had his successful projects, but the question of would they ever have happened without his father is a legitimate one. And he probably would have had much more success and a much larger fortune had he stuck to the business he knew, developing real estate. He got sidetracked with buying an airline, paying absurd prices for casinos that still are far from trophy properties, and while he may have benefited, the holders of stock and various bond issues have not.
Fred Trump is the man you would have given your money to and slept soundly at night. He was an astute man of business, he was self-made, and he spent no time promoting who he was. In this manner he was like many other long time major developers in the NYC area that developed massive amounts of real estate and fortunes to match without having any interest in the world knowing what they were worth.
Forbes Magazine often documents the calls they receive from Donald Trump complaining about where he is listed on their richest people list. This is not something his father or grandfather ever would have contemplated, nor would they brag to anyone listening how they increased their net worth by failing to honor financial commitments. In the end his charismatic style allowed him to get financial institutions so grossly over invested in his view of the world that he could never be allowed to go bankrupt, as the lenders could not afford it.
His predecessors in the family rate much higher on substance, and the newest Mr. Trump rates highly on style. But for all of the perceived satisfaction he would have the public believes he enjoys, in the end the author portrays a man that craves publicity to the detriment of his personal life. Squiring around beautiful women makes for nice pictures, but he and it and getting a bit old.

New York through the lives three fascinating Characters
By Dr. Max Goldensohn
This is a wonderful book. Ms. Blair has taken a complex and difficult subject and made it exciting and fascinating. The Trumps have always deserved analysis beyond the scandal-sheet treatment they usually get in the press. Ms. Blair has provided an account of all the real adventures behind their successes and failures: political, financial and even personal. After reading this book, one feels that the links between strong individuals and the unfolding of history beome clear and alive. The writing is great, the story even better.

THE FOUNDER, THE BUILDER AND THE STAR
By Dorothy Weiss
Did you ever wonder how Donald Trump could have been so knowledgable and astute at so young an age. How did he do it? Who taught him? Family that's who. Unbelievably true. Ms Blair's research spans three generations. Friedrich who eventually earned a fortune in Alaska; his son Fred Jr. who made millions from U.S. government housing programs and his grandson, "the Donald" real estate developer and promoter. The book gives us an up close view of Donald Trump's ego, his wives and their role, his survival after near-bankruptcy, his eagerness for publicity and his "midas" touch. The man can close a deal. Well written and fascinating. Once upon a time there was the Rothchilds and the Rockefellers. This era it seems belongs to the Trump Dynasty.
