About the Author

Joseph M. Dukert, PhD, a political economist, has been an independent energy analyst and consultant for more than forty years. He is regarded widely as the outstanding authority on interdependence in the North American energy market. His expertise covers both technical developments and economics in all energy sources as well as energy efficiency. A Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, he was named several years ago as a Senior Fellow of the U.S. Association for Energy Economics and is President of that 1000-member organization for 2009. He has also served as Senior Advisor to the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation and as a consultant to the International Energy Agency of the OECD.

Clear, insightful presentation of a multifaceted subject

This book is a gem, and its timing is just right. With the recent leadership change in Washington, DC, there is renewed hope (though no guarantee) for responsible, intellectually honest discussion and actions to address U.S. and worldwide energy needs and energy-related issues. This book should help inform the policy debate. On the one hand, it is a thoughtful primer on energy resources, technologies, and systems--an Energy for Dummies, if you will. On the other hand, it is a level-headed presentation of interrelationships and tradeoffs--of the need for balance among many worthy goals, including security, convenience, affordable supplies, and respect for the environment. The author seems to have no agenda other than to share the knowledge and insights he has gained over the years. My only quibble is that this gem deserved a better setting; the publisher could have spent a few extra dollars sprucing up the graphics and layout. I highly recommend this book.

"Energy" -- Unbiased, thoughtful, and informative

"Energy" is an unusually readable and highly worthwhile distillation of principles for understanding the difficult subject of energy. I read it over a few evenings and would recommend it for anyone interested in energy or simply being an informed adult. The experienced analyst will benefit from the integration of discussion across energy issues and the newcomer will learn about the "basics" of the subject. This book is part of a series of Greenwood Guides to Business and Economics -- a series written for the non-expert reader who wants to gain an understanding of an important topic. In this instance, the book delivers the goods. I say this having an appreciation for the complexities of energy issues developed over a long career career at the U. S. Energy Information Administration and carried into my retirement. At EIA we developed and disseminated information about national and international energy markets and dealt with every conceivable energy question. There are few simple answers but "Energy" has provided an excellent means for looking at the issues and deriving one's own ideas.

"Energy" opens with a chapter titled "Energy in the Balance" -- presumably a wordplay on Al Gore's "Earth in the Balance" but meant to convey that understanding the markets requires a sense of the elastic nature of supply and demand by looking at the integration of types of energy through supply/demand balances for individual fuels, overall energy balances across types of energy, influences of externalities, energy substitutions, geographic sources and influences, societal goals, and so forth. The chapter concludes with some basics for reading and interpreting energy statistics (an ability which can be elusive even for the most knowledgeable experts). Every page is highly readable and Dukert is not afraid to step on the toes of those casually espousing what is not feasibly achieved, e.g., near-term U.S. energy independence. Other chapters include a very interesting discussion "How Much is Enough" followed by chapters discussing the broad concept of energy's cost, reliability of supply, environmental factors, time as a factor for policy and business decisions, national energy policy and its economic implications, and issues for sustainable development.

The author, Joseph Dukert, and Greenwood Guides have done us a favor with this book. I would hope that it gets a broad reading and teachers would consider "Energy" as supplemental reading for courses in energy, economics, business, government, political science, engineering or other disciplines requiring a firmer background in the subject.

Perfumed Sleeves and Tangled Hair explores the possibilities and limits of terms such as "body," "woman," "gender," and "agency"―categories that emerged within the context of western philosophical, religious, and feminist debates―to analyze texts that come out of altogether different temporal and cultural contexts. Through close textual readings of a wide range of classical and medieval narratives, from well-known works such as the Tale of Genji to popular Buddhist tales, Rajyashree Pandey offers new ways of understanding such terms within the context of medieval Buddhist knowledge.

Pandey suggests that "woman" in medieval Japanese narratives does not constitute a self-evident and distinct category, and that there is little in these works to indicate that the sexed body was the single most important and overarching site of difference between men and women. She argues that the body in classical and medieval texts is not understood as something constituted through flesh, blood, and bones, or as divorced from the mind, and that in the Tale of Genji it becomes intelligible not as an anatomical entity but rather as something apprehended through robes and hair. Pandey provocatively claims that "woman" is a fluid and malleable category, one that often functions as a topos or figural site for staging debates not about real life women, but rather about delusion, attachment, and enlightenment, issues of the utmost importance to the Buddhist medieval world.

Pandey's book challenges many of the assumptions that have become commonplace in academic writings on women and Buddhism in medieval Japan. She questions the validity of speaking of Buddhism's misogyny, women's oppression, passivity, or proto-feminism, and points to the anachronistic readings that result when fundamentally modern questions and concerns are transposed unreflexively onto medieval Japanese texts. Taking a broad, interdisciplinary approach, and engaging widely with literature, religious studies, and feminism, while paying close attention to medieval texts and genres, Pandey boldly throws down the gauntlet, challenging some of the sacred cows of contemporary scholarship on medieval Japanese women and Buddhism.

First, its coverage is really quite comprehensive, ranging from the Guangxu emperor to Hu Jintao and his likely successor Xi Jinping, and from public health and the environmental crisis to the future of electoral democracy in Hong Kong. Second, the selection of contributing chapter writers is excellent: thus, we have Keith Schoppa on the fall of the Qing, Frederick Teiwes on the Maoist era, Tyrene Whyte on population planning, Robert Barnett on Tibet, David Zweig on political economy, Richard Kraus on the arts, Shelley Rigger on Taiwan, and so forth."--The China Journal

Good introductory text

This is a good introductory text for an overview course on China. Its chapters cover almost every important issue except the military. If the editors put out a new edition, I hope they would rectify that and perhaps add a bit more detail on pre-1840s history to give the student a bit better grounding in the importance and relevance of history to today's Chinese.

A fine first novel.

This book got off to a strong start, with good character development and a compelling premise. For the first half, I could hardly put it down as the story line propelled me along.

Where my interest began to slow was in the second half, where the story became fantastical to me. I think Draper's idea was to have the reader consider the absurdity of organized religion, its rituals and its beliefs about what constitutes a good life. I also think he was drawing a not-too-subtle alignment between dogmatic religious practice and mental health. If this was indeed Draper's goal in the story, he made his point, although somewhat awkwardly. Draper clearly did a lot of research on religion and mental health, and occasionally goes a little overboard to convince the reader that he knows his stuff.

The afterward and Draper's blog (johndraper.com/blog) give a wonderful insight into his thinking, his life and the inspirations that created this fine first novel. And reading both helped me truly understand the novel and the novelist.

"A Danger to God Himself" got me thinking, which is a good thing. I recommend this novel and look forward to more from Draper. I hope his next book comes soon!

Sometimes when I sit down to write a review I have multiple directions or slants to go with my write-up. It's paralyzing, not knowing where to start. This is one of those times. As with anything too complicated to wrap your mind around at once, the best approach is to break it into pieces. So that's what I'll do here, starting with a focus on the basics of the characters and the story, moving into the religious aspects, and finishing off with my ruminations on the kind of reader who I think would be the most likely to enjoy A Danger to God Himself. I expect a lot of words will be spilled.

The main characters are great. Kenny, a young adult (which we all know is still just a kid) who does what's expected of him, even if maybe he'd rather not. He's a type we've probably all seen, even if the situation is different. His missionary companion, Jared, is a strange duck, keeping the reader off balance, not sure what to make of him. In the beginning, he provides comic relief, but he also drives much of the story.

The secondary characters are all well formed as well, each helping move the story forward. I especially liked Jared's dad and sister who were integral to the story and to gaining a complete understanding of Jared. Some of the characters are caricatures, not in the sense that they aren't well formed or are flat. More in that they may seem just a touch over the top, which is fitting for a story that is satirical.

The story is satirical in a couple ways. One is that it satirizes religion, especially those who take what many consider to be myths containing lessons to help in living a good life and interpret them too literally. But on another level, Jared and everything that happens to him is a satire of Joseph Smith and the founding of the Mormon church.

Which is a segue into the religious part. Those not familiar with Mormonism might wonder how much of the story is realistic. The answer is that while satirical, nothing here is out of the realm of possibility. In fact, Mormonism has a long history of spawning splinter groups that go way beyond the mainstream church. Even within the mainstream, the culture rewards followers and extremism while discouraging critical thinking or questioning of any kind.

That last part is a clue of who this book isn't for. It's doubtful a devout Mormon has read this far unless it is one of my still-faithful sisters, wondering how far I've gone this time. This isn't the book for them. However, anyone without a problem with taking a critical look at religion, regardless of their personal beliefs, will find much to like. I'll end this with a quote from the book. If you read this and give a knowing nod, it is especially for you.

"Mormonism isn’t just a religion. It’s a way of being. Like alcoholism, I guess. Alcoholics say they never stop being alcoholics, don’t they? They’re always recovering alcoholics. Same thing with Mormonism. It’s a culture. If you’re born a Mormon, you’re always a Mormon—more so if you were actually raised in the church."

I loved this book

I loved this book! The characters and narrator have unique, vivid voices that caught me up and made reading this book so very satisfying. I was immediately sucked into the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. You see Jared slowly succumb to his psychological demons. This causes Kenny to transform from a shallow, self-centered young man who has never examined his life and faith into a caring man who sees the world in his own way, contrary to how he was taught to simply accept unquestioningly. You see him find love and the value of emotional intimacy, something completely unknown to him in the past. He questions and challenges, while looking for a sign of God’s existence – and ultimately finding something more real and vital to his existence. Definitely recommend this book.

Do I know Microsoft Office?... I Excel at it!

This is a great book for those getting started with PowerPivot. I am a long time Excel user, and am pretty good with Excel Formulas, following along with the exercises in this book it really helped me bridge my knowledge from Excel Formulas over the DAX. This book provides great visuals, explanations, and the exercises concrete what you are learning. The sample database along with the exercises created a resource I will use going forward when I am solving real problems/writing formulas for my PowerPivot reports for work. Excellent resource, and well worth the money!

This book is nothing short of excellent -- I feel very lucky to have come across it. I have read many DAX books, all of which have great aspects, but Matt's combination of simplicity and depth, the exercises and the repetition of key concepts has boosted my understanding by a wide margin. For anyone serious about learning DAX, and particularly for business users/ Excel power users who don't have a programming background, this is a must-have in your DAX library. (If you get it, do the exercises, no matter how simple they may seem. they are invaluable.)

It feels like this book was a labor of love, and all of us learners out there are grateful.

Excellent book to actually LEARN how to write DAX!

This is the book to start with if you are beginning your DAX writing journey. In my opinion, Matt's approach to helping people learn how to write DAX is superior to any of the other DAX books I have read. He introduces a topic/concept in small pieces, explains it, then immediately provides practice exercises to reinforce the material. This is the BEST way to learn: by attempting to write the DAX code, and seeing if you understood it by looking at the results. The pace is just right, so the amount of material you need to conquer is attainable.

Matt also explained some topics in a way that I had not seen previously, but found eye-opening. It filled in several gaps in my understanding, and answered lingering questions I had. I think he just "gets it" when it comes to teaching, and explains things in a way that is exactly what I was looking for. His chapter on the FILTER function was exceptional, and it reads like he is giving you a personal tutoring session.

If you are a beginner, this book is for you. Even if you have read other DAX books, and have some experience writing DAX, I want to encourage you to get this book. It will help crystallize the material you already know, and give you some new insights into what is going on with DAX. It certainly did for me.

I also want to encourage the author, Matt Allington, to consider writing another book on DAX. He is a superb teacher, and hit a grand slam on this one!

This is the one to read if you want to be "lucky"

I have worked in institutional funds management for 35 years, on both the sell side as a financial engineer, and on the buy side as a portfolio manager. Early on I managed a team that created one of the first VAR systems, and later I learned why a good VAR model is necessary, but not sufficient, to understand the risks embedded in your portfolio. Security price changes are not distributed normally. Fat tails are not just a curious quirk.

I try routinely to keep up with the major academic and practitioner research in the area of risk management, theory and practice. As a consequence, I have read more than a a few books about tail risk hedging. They are generally written after a crash reminds a new generation of skeptics that, yes, some day you might see a black swan. (Which means that you better be ready to see a neon pink one, too.) Most of these books are technically competent. Occasionally one is well written and clear. But getting the math right does not mean that the author understands the material at an intuitive level. That takes practical, hands-on-the-controls experience that few quants have.

Who should read this book? Read it if you design tail risk hedges, of course. Read it if you are starting out, and want to learn how it is done. And also read it if you rely on someone else to design your tail hedge. It will help you to understand why it is structured as it is, what the hedge can do, what its limitations are, and how it can be customized to tilt in the direction of protecting against the event risks you think are the most threatening.

Each emergency is different, and yet each one is the same. They don't teach a student pilot how to recover from a spin by describing the fluid mechanics of a stall. They put you beside an instructor. A stochastic differental equation just doesn't capture what an experienced flight instructor might blandly call an "unusual attitude."

If I were learning how to recover an airplane that seemed about to lose a wing -- "It just happened! All of a sudden! For no reason at all!" -- I would hope that someone who had done this a few times before was sitting beside me, ready to take over. And when we had landed safely, I would want that same person to be the one to explain to me why there actually was a reason for what seemed to me to be "no reason at all!". Then I would ask what I should do to prepare for the next big moment, and most importantly, what I could do to make that moment of terror less likely to happen again.

If I couldn't monopolize that instructor's time, I would ask her to write this kind of book, and hope she could write clearly as Bahnsali does.

You never forget your first, but you only get to remember it if you survive it. Bhansali has obviously been there. He is rigorous, but also clear. He is the right guy to explain how to prepare for an event that you cannot precisely predict or precisely describe in advance. This book tells you what you how to prepare, and how to calculate how much being prepared will likely cost -- the insurance premium -- why you should do it anyway, and how to get the most bang for your hedging buck. He even explains how a chaotic market can be a blessing. On the day when everybody else is sweating margin calls, and dumping anything that is still liquid enough to be sold, wouldn't you want to be the portfolio manager sitting on a tidy little pile of cash that had been generated by a tail event hedge?

If you are going to read one book to show you how to be that "lucky" manager, you might as well read the best book on the topic. Luck happens when you are prepared. This is the best book to read if you want to be lucky.

A must read for CFOs,

With S&P 500 up 30% in 2013, and economic outlook improving in the US and Europe, it is hard to imagine a tail risk will occur in the near horizon. However, as history told us, black swan event happens more frequently than normal. With market participants gaining confidence and VIX 80% reading lower than in 2008, this is the right time to implement tail risk hedging strategies.

Dr. Bhansali's book is unique. There is no book prior to this one on the market that go through hedging decision in a systematic matter. As an advisor to CFOs on hedging strategies, I highly recommend this book, not just for CFOs, but also for money managers, quants and finance students.
