Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop CS2

I'll keep this focused on what I learned since there are some in-depth reviews already. All I can say is AMAZING! I knew absolutely NOTHING about Photoshop - Zero. I opened this book beside my computer and went through each tutorial in the 300+ pages. By the time I finished the last tutorial, I was proficient enough to create some amazing photos to use on my websites - One has 58 layers, special effects, incredible lighting effects, color matching, perfecting blending of three totally different photos into one, even the header for our website was created using Photoshop CS2. My pride and joy is a photo I created of a lonely teenager walking down a desolate road for our film production website - Actually it is so amazing that we are also using it for the large movie poster - The lonely road was an old photo I took years ago on family property in northern Arizona. It was crooked and poorly shot with a cheap camera. I totally changed it using Photoshop CS2. I removed the drab sky and replaced it with a sky that was dark where it needed to be, but also has multiple layers of semi-transparent light puffy clouds that allowed light to shine through and be cast on the boy, creating a shadow that perfectly matched actual shadows cast by the surrounding trees. in the original photo I added very intricate twigs to the trees to give them the shape and character they needed to portray, perfectly matching each individual tree. The lonely teen was created 100% in Photoshop CS2, including his shadow that fell on the road. Because I wanted him in dirty sneakers, I shot a photo of an old pair I had by placing them in a 'walking' position, then added them to the teenager All of this was done by using the knowledge I gained by going through this book. Literally everyone I showed the photo to wanted to know who the teenager was that I photographed. I don't want to mislead anyone: This book did not tell me HOW to create a person in Photoshop CS2, but using the knowledge I gained from the tutorials in the book and my own ingenuity, I created that lonely teen. I have a shelf in my studio full of "For Dummies" books, but when it comes to Photoshop CS2, this book is all I needed.

for the hands on learner such as myself this is perfect.

To do this, you do that. To do that you do this. I have always thought a software instruction manual should always have fewer words then keystrokes for each action. Very hard to do but this one comes close. Excellent illustrations. But if you want all the subtleties explained to you, as you go through it this is probably not for you.
I am using this book at present, and I am a relative beginner, so keep that in mind as you weigh my comments, but this seems to be working for me.
Also if you are like me doing CS2 because adobe has made the software license virtually free, this is for you.

Review of Photoshop CS2 "Teach Yourself VISUALLY" book

Photoshop is a very complex program. Over the years, I've bought a shelf full of "how-to" books in an attempt to master it. I'm not a professional photographer...and THIS is the first book that makes it simple to follow and learn the multiple steps needed to get the results I'm trying to achieve without overloading me with so much technical detail that I give up in frustration. I highly recommend it. You should get the specific book for the version of Photoshop YOU are using. As an aside - I recently upgraded my laptop and have Office 2010. I bought the WORD 2010 "Visual" book - it's awesome.
