A Brilliant Book

This is, at least in my opinion, Gleeson's best book, although JUDO FOR THE WEST and ALL ABOUT JUDO are two of the books that changed the way judo people think about the subject. JUDO INSIDE OUT is not an easy read. It stretches the boundries of accepted judo thought. When it was written, it was a breakthrough book and not one that was readily accepted by the judo community.
This book examines the sociology of judo and how judo has changed the culture it has touched. Gleeson's writings spawned a number of people who have taught his views on judo skills, judo coaching and the fundamental nature of how we think about judo.
If you want another book on how to perform routine judo techniques, this is not the book for you. But if you want a book that will make you examine the purpose and nature of judo and its role in society, then this book is an important one to read.

Improve Project & Program Outcomes While Lowering Frustrations

Managing Complex Projects and Programs is not a project execution how-to book, nor is it intended to help you study for your PMP exam. It is a book that takes an in-depth look at the real-world dynamics associated with executing complex projects and programs inside large, complex organizations. The author explores the challenges associated with advancing multiple projects and programs simultaneously and how organizations have evolved and adapted over time to deal with their growing portfolio and the unintended consequences associated with these adaptations.

The book is based on interviews and feedback from a large number of project and program practitioners and business executives. As I read their stories, I can relate to their experiences and the author's insightful root-cause analysis brought several aha moments. It's rare to find a book that looks holistically at this problem from a systems perspective and suggests ways to address these issues that goes well beyond the application of a different tool or methodology such as agile, lean, complex or extreme project management techniques.

The book takes an unconventional but realistic approach in defining the issues and provides powerful organizational and leadership insights that can be used to improve the probability of achieving desired outcomes with far less frustration. I have worked in the field of complex project and program management in large organizations for many years and highly recommend this book. It is both a useful reference for the practitioner who wants to better understand and manage the forces in their organization that are acting on their project or program, and the executive who wishes to improve the organizational structure, governance processes and the selection of future project and program leaders.

Dense, informative and chatty all at once

Project management expert, Richard J. Heaslip offers up a highly informative and detailed breakdown on 'Third Generation' programmatics - the managerial systems and principles used by organizations to oversee their projects/programs. Before getting to this third-gen section that focuses on adaptive leadership principles Heaslip utilizes the first half of the book to walk readers through the more traditional PM practices that defined the 'first' and 'second' generations of the field. Taking this slightly historical approach on the subject allows readers to be well versed in the established bedrock principles and helps to reinforce the necessity and importance on an adaptive approach in today's rapid fire globally networked field of play.

Since the book is written for project management professionals (or at least for those studying up for their PMP credentials) there is an inherent degree of complexity to the overall presentation but kudos goes out to Heaslip's affable presentation which gives the book a strangely warm and chatty vibe that makes these densely packed pages slightly more engaging and absorbable.

A Valuable Resource for Program Managers

Rick shares his wealth of experience and research and provides insights and information not available in other Program Management books. His discussion of risk and uncertainty and his five complexities framework will undoubtedly become a standard for many program management professionals in the future. My copy is filled with post-its and dog -eared pages that I will reference from time to time. I found it to be an easy read with a lot of helpful models, examples and definitions. I really enjoyed this book and I am pleased to recommend it to others.

Gail Vance Civille is president of Sensory Spectrum, Inc., a management consulting firm involved in the sensory evaluation of foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, paper, fabrics, personal care, and other consumer products. She has trained several flavor and texture descriptive profile panels in her work with industry, universities, and government. She has also conducted several workshops and courses in basic sensory evaluation methods as well as in advanced methods and theory. She is a founding member and former chair of the Society of Sensory Professionals, and has published several articles on general sensory methods as well as sophisticated descriptive flavor and texture techniques.

B. Thomas Carr is principal of Carr Consulting, a research consulting firm that provides project management, product evaluation, and statistical support services to the food, beverage, personal care, and home care industries. He has over 30 years of experience in applying statistical techniques to all phases of research on consumer products. He is a member of the US delegation to the ISO TC34/SC12, is involved in the statistical training of scientists, and has been invited by several professional organizations to speak on topics of statistical methods and statistical consulting in industry.

University of New Hampshire sociologist Duncan (Rural Poverty in America, not reviewed) looks at the social relations and political and economic institutions that perpetuate poverty in rural America. ``Blackwell'' (place names have been changed) in Appalachia and Dahlia on the Mississippi Delta, are two of the poorest areas in the US. Duncan studied the lives of the residents of these places, and what she found was communities where the ``haves'' and ``have nots'' inhabit different worlds within historically structured, rigid class and, in Dahlia, race divisions. In both places local elitescoal company operators in Blackwell, plantation owners in Dahliacontrol not only the economic life of the community but the political life as well. Their power is near absolute, and they use public institutions, including schools, to further their own interests and punish those who cross them. The poor remain ``powerless, dependent, and do not participate'' in civic life. A kind of stasis sets in where the poor see no option but to give way to those who have always had power, and the powerful resist change as it may threaten their status. In contrast, ``Gray Mountain,'' in northern New England, is a town with a strong civic culture based on a blue-collar middle class that has created public institutionsfrom little league to effective schoolsthat serve all in the community. Duncan, through in-depth investigation and interviews, concludes that only a strong civic culture, a sense among citizens of community and the need to serve that community, can truly address poverty. Yet class and race relations in places like Blackwell and Dahlia preclude such a sense of community. Her answer, going against so much conventional wisdom, is federal government intervention, especially to create equitable school systems where they do not exist. Only such intervention, Duncan asserts, will give the poor the knowledge of alternatives, the hope they now lack. Moving and troubling. An amazing book

From the title, this sounds like a very serious book - and the topic is serious, for sure - but the surprise is that it's fascinating to delve into these communities and understand how people of all income levels live day to day. This is a very well written piece that uses lots of real life situations to illustrate it's larger point - that poor people can escape poverty when given a chance. That could be a supportive community, a supportive grandmother, or a good supportive school system. Especially interesting is the proposition that the federal government could make a big difference by ensuring that local school systems in high poverty communities (rural or urban) really serve the needs of their students, including those from poor families. Releasing people from poverty seems like a big impact for just getting the schools to do what they should do anyway.

milestone insights about what makes a strong community

I found this book both a page turner-with its gripping first person stories-and a revelation. Though the book's subtitle is "Why Poverty Persists in Rural America," I would say this book has major implications for urban and suburban as well as rural places and policies. I have worked for many years in the field of community development. This book is truly explains what makes a strong community. Here is a sociologist who actually spent years out `in the field' talking to the gamut of people who live there, and building her insights from the ground up. Robert Putnam may tell us about northern Italy or national trends in the U.S. Duncan goes far deeper and for the first time, as far as I know, figures out why we need mixed income communities, why a large gap between the poor and the rich isn't good for a specific community or for the nation as a whole, and how we could make it possible for poor families, in inner cities as well as rural places, to break out of generations of poverty. Imagine what would happen if public policy were based on the insights of this milestone book! Alice Shabecoff, founder and former executive director of the Community Information Exchange.

An Eye-opener

As a student, I am required to ready many books,and most of them are dry. Cynthia Duncan shows in 'Worlds Apart' that sociology does not have to be boring. She made an uncomfortable subject easy to read. I only put the book down because I had other assignments to read. I loved how she intertwines the statements from the interviewees into her findings and discussions. Cynthia Duncan does not just draw a bleak picture, but shows what everybody could do differently. I already recommended the book to friends, and would recommend it especially to people still thinking about the worthy and un-worthy poor.

A great book for Biopsychology students and those who are interested in brain.

If you are looking for a `friendly' book that gives you a comprehensive introduction on Biopsychology. This is the one to go for. It is meant to be a textbook, yes, but it could also be an enjoyable read for those who are interested in why we behave the way we do, for example, why do we sleep? Why have sex? What cause satiety and appetite?

The book starts off nicely with the introduction to neurons, brains and biological psychology before proceeding to chapters covering a wide range of topics such as sensory systems, the control of movement, hunger, satiety and body weight, emotional state, sleep, sexual development and behaviour, learning and memory, language and cognition, mental illness, drugs and addiction, degenerative diseases of the brain, genes and behaviour.

You don't need to have a previous background in psychology to be able to follow the book. (I have no background in psychology. My educational background is in Mathematics with secondary school science knowledge, plus English is not my first language and I can follow the book just fine.) The way the book was written is as if the author is talking to me. I have enjoyed reading this book. Despite the book being labeled as a textbook, it does not give a tranquilising effect like many other textbooks do.

You can either start off from chapter 1 or jump to any chapter of your interest. When my friend saw this book, he flipped through the contents and jumped right to the sex chapter.

Another `nice' features of this book apart from it being very well-written in a language accessible to non-psychology major and laypeople alike are that it is well-illustrated, a clear and concise summary at the end of each chapter. The book also includes a list of further reading for each chapter so that the readers can expand their knowledge of the topic.
